J. BARDSLEY.
DOOR KNOB. NO. 373,632. Patented NovpZZ, 1887.
l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH BARDSLEY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DOOR-KNOB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,632, dated November 22, 1887.
Application filed October 8, 1887. Serial No. 251,792.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BARDsLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Knobs, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in door-knobs; and it consists, particularly, in novel means for securing the shank within the knob, so as to render these two elements immovable with relation to each other.
In carrying the invention into effectthe usual internallythreaded inner end oftheknobshank is provided with a slotrunning transversely to the length of the shank, and in thisis placed a metal plate which extends entirely across the shank and is of such length that its ends will not extend beyond the circular line of the screw-thread. After the plate has been inclosed Within the said slot, the shank is, aecordingto the usual method, screwed into the socket formed in the knob, after which the said metal plate will be driven partly into the wood of the knob by an instrument inserted through the knob-shank, thereby preventing the knob from turning on the shank.
The invention will be more fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section through the knob-shank and plate, the latter being inclosed wholly within the slot formed in the shank and being in the position it assumes prior to being driven into the body of the knob. Fig. 2 is alike view of the same, illustrating the position of the metal plate afmetal plate fitting within said slot. D is placed within the slot O, and the shank (No model.)
ter ithas been driven into the body of the knob; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the lineYYof Fig. 2, Figs. 1 and2 be ing taken on the line X X of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, A designates the knob; B, the knObshank; O, the transverse slot cut in the inner end of the knob shank, and D the The plate then screwed into the socket E formed in the knob, as shown in Fig. 1, after which, by any suitable instrument applied through the knobshank, the plate is driven partly into the wood of the knob, as indicated in Fig. 2, in which position, being partly embedded in the wood and partly held by the slot C, it will prevent the one turning without the other, and hence operateto hold theknob rigidly upon its shank.
NVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The knob-shank having the open slot at its inner end and thetlat plate contained in said slot, combined with the wooden knob having a socket to receive the inner end of said shank, one longitudinal edge of said plate being einbeddedin the knob when the parts are in operative position, while the other longitudinal edge of same remains in said slot, substantially as set forth.
Signed at NewYork, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 4th day of October, A. D. 1887.
JOSEPH BARDSLEY.
