N. PERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEu JOSEPH V. MORTON, OF WINOHESTER, KENTUCKY. r
IMPROVEMENT IN LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 218,048, dated July 29, 1879 application tiled March 3,1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH V. MoRToN, of Winchester, in the county of Clarke and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Imv proved Door-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a plan of the fastener attached to a door. Fig. 2 is a section of the same on line a: rv.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a door-fastener that shall be adjustable to doors of different thicknesses.
The invention consists ot' the handles A A', the wedge-shaped stop or key B, that is secured to handle A by means of' a pin, a', the screw-nut or socket D, secured by means of a pin to the lower part of handle A', the screws C and E, pinned to A' and A, respectively, as shown, and latch F.
In the drawings, G represents the door 5 H, the latch-guide 5 I, the staple for holding the latch, and K K the latch-plates.
The fastener is secured to a door by boring two holes through the door, one above the other, and at the required distance apart for the reception of the connecting-screws C and E, the key B, and the socket D. These screws may be made of any required length to suit the thickness of the door. One of them screws into and holds the key B, and the other is screwed into and holds the nut or socket D. Then to the screw-heads, nut, and key, which all have projecting lugs pierced with holes,
the handles A and A' are secured by means of pins, as shown. I
The screw E and nut D are drawn together tightly to prevent motion of the lower parts of the handles, their shoulders being held rmly against the latch plates, while the shank of the screw C is made of such alength that, although it is screwed tightly into B, it permits that sufcient motion may be given to the upper part of the handles to draw out of its socket in the door and push back again the key B. As the key B is drawn out by a pull or push upon one of the handles 1t engages with and raises the latch F, so that the door may be opened, and as B is pushed or drawn back into its socket the latch falls to hold the door closed.
It is obvious that by suitably varying the length of the screws (l and E this fastener can be easily applied to doors of any thickness.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A door-fastener consisting of handles A A', key B, socket D, screws G and E, latch F, and latch-guide H, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In combination with the handlesAA' and screw C, the wedge-shaped key B, substantiallyT as herein shown and described.
JOSEPH VENABLE MORTON.
