Description

No. 897,206. PATENTED AUG. 25, 1008.
E. M. HEMBREE. I
DOOR SEOURER.
APPLICATION FILED IEB.26,19OB.
Suva/M70:
.UNITED STATES TENT ELIHUE M. HEMBREE, OF ROSWELL, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES M. PURSLEY, OF MARIETTA, GEORGIA.
DOOR-SEC'UBER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELII-IUE M. HEMBREE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roswell, in the county of Cobb and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to securing devices for doors and the main object of the invention is to provide a simple, portable pocket device comprising relatively movable, slidable and pivotally disposed members, adapting the device to be readily folded for carrying the same in the pocket, or adjusted into the proper relation to each other to form an effective fastening device for securing doors and the like, and preventing the same from being opened by inquisitive or unauthorized persons.
The device, forming the subject matter of this invention, is especially adapted for the use of tourists or travelers, and may be used upon any door, window, or transom of a hotel, inn, or other public or private dwelling. The device may be used upon doors which are already provided with locks and keys in order to prevent anyone from gaining admission therethrough, but is especially designed for use in connection with doors which are not provided with bolts, locks or other fastening appliances.
With the above object in view,,the invention consists in a securing device, embodying certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as here inafter fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a detail sectional view of a door and door jamb, showing the improved securing device operatively applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the securing device with the parts adjusted to their operative positions. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the securing device folded for insertionin the pocket.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all figures of the drawlngs.
In order to illustrate the application of the securing device, I have illustrated in Fig. 1, a sectional view of a door, designated at 1, and a door jamb 2. The securing device contemplated in this invention is designed to have a portion thereof inserted between the Specification of Letters Patent.

free or swinging edge of the door and the oppositely lying portion of the door jamb, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The said securing device comprises essentially a hook or anchor 3, consisting preferably of a metal plate or strip having one end bent at an angle and sharpened to form a penetrating hook or fluke 4, which is adapted to be driven into the wood of the door jamb in the act of closing the door, the free edge of the latter serving to force the sharpened hook or fluke 4 into the jamb. The opposite outer end of the anchor 3 is slotted, as shown at 5, and curved or rolled, as at 6, to form a pair of oppositely lying knuckles or sleeves adapted to receive a pintle 7, which is fixedly held therein, and which forms the pivot and retaining device for the slidable cross head.
The slidable cross head 8 consists of a metal strip, the width of which is slightly less than the width of the slot 5. Said strip is bent upon itself into U-shape, as illustrated, to comprise the substantially parallel members 9, joined together by the U shaped. or curved connecting portion 10, which forms a stop at one end of the cross head. One of the parallel members 9 is provided at its extremity with an inbent lip 11, which extends toward the opposite parallel member but terminates short thereof so as to leave an intervening gap or space 12, preferably slightlyless in width than the thickness of the hook or anchor 3.
By means of the construction described, the slidable cross head may be adjusted to the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, in which it-is substantially at right angles to the body of the anchor or hook, the said cross head may be adjusted into the position illustrated in Fig. 3, in which the parallel members 9 lie on opposite sides of the anchor or hook 3, and by reason of the resiliency of the parallel members, the latter serve to clasp the hook or anchor 3 between the terminal portions of the cross head, thereby holding the said parts in their folded position, and adding to the convenience of carrying the article in the pocket, preventing the unfolding of the device while in the pocket.
In securing the door, the cross head is drawn outward and swung around until one end of the cross head, preferably that end which is connected by the curved portion 10, is brought into engagement with the pintle 7. Before closing the door, the anchor or hook 3 is laid against the jamb, as shown in Fig. 1, with the hook 4 facing the amb. The slidable cross head is then moved longitudinally so that a portion thereof will bear against the door and the opposite end portion thereof against the opposite facing or door jamb, whereupon the opening of the door by inquisitive or unauthorized persons will be effectually prevented.
The device in the form illustrated in Fig. 2, is also adapted to be used for the purpose of securely fastening transoms, by introducing the anchor member between the swinging edge of the transom and the frame in which the transom is mounted. It will also be understood that by driving the hook 4 firmly into the door jamb or transoms frame, it will sustain itself in place when the door or transom is opened and the device may thus constitute a permanent fixture for the door or transom frame as the case may be.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is A door securer comprising an anchor formed at one end With a hook, and at the other end with a slot and rolled extremities,
a pintle grasped by the rolled extremities and a cross-head of U-shape having parallel resilient members adapted to slide in the slot;
one of the parallel members having an inbent lip at its extremity leaving a gap through which the pintle is adapted to pass and in which the anchor is adapted to slide.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 35 in presence of two witnesses.
