JUDSON R. MELLOTT, F TULIA, TEXAS.
DOOR-FASTENEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 1910.
Application filed December 28, 1909. Serial No. 535,317.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jonson R. MELLOTT, citizen of the United States, residing at Tulia, in the county of Swisher and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door fasteners and refers particularly to a. device of this nature which may be conveniently attached to any form of door or hinged closure.
An object of this invention is to provide a portable fastener which may be conveniently carried by persons traveling and who desire to lock the doors of their rooms in hotels.
The invention has for another object the provision of a fastener of this character which comprises but few parts and which does not necessitate the rigid application of any one of the parts to either the door or the jamb surrounding the same, but has the parts thereof so formed that they can be detachably secured in position and firmly secure the door when closed.
This invention also contemplates the provision of a reinforcing plate for engagement with the jamb of the door when the device is to be employed permanently, and to which the securing member is engaged.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of a door and the jamb thereabout showing the application of the improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the door and jamb having the fastener applied thereto and in a locked position. Fig. 3 discloses the application of the fastener to the door and jamb without the use of the securing plate. Fig. l is a detail perspective view of the retaining member, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the retaining plate.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing the retaining member, which is disclosed to advantage in Fig. 4L comprises a length of wire which is bent upon itself and twisted toward its outer end to form an eye and a pair of arms 11. The arms 11 are flattened at their inner faces which engage against the jamb 12 of y the door-frame andare curved inwardly at their ,free ends to form hooks 13. The hooks 13 are flattened and reduced toward their outer ends to form biting edges whereby the same may be easily engaged within the face of the jamb 12.
A securing plate 1 1 is employed which comprises a flattened portion of metal of rectangular formation which is secured by suitable screws 15 to the inner face of the door jamb 12 and is provided centrally with a pair of openings 16 for the reception of the hooks 13. VVhen the plate 14; is employed the door jamb 12 is cut-away at its inner face to form a recess or pocket 17 for the reception of the hooks 13 so as not to damage the jamb 12. The provision of the plate 14: and the pocket 17 enables the securing of the ,hooks 13 readily through the plate 1 1 and thus forms a means whereby the jamb is especially adapted for the reception of the fastener.
It will be noted from the drawing that the eye 10 and the crotch of the retaining member extend beyond the inner face of the jamb 12 and consequently beyond the inner face of the door 18 when closed, the crotch receiving therethrough a locking pin 19 which is engaged against the inner face of the jamb 12 and door 18.
The locking pin 19 comprises a length of wire which is looped at one end as 'at 20 to form a suitable finger-hold for-withdrawing and inserting the locking pin 19 through the crotch, while its opposite end is preferably pointed as at 21 to admit of the easy positioning of the locking pin 19.
In Fig. 3 is disposed the application of the retaining member wherein the hooks 1-3 of the same are forced into the body of the jamb 12 and thus prevent the longitudinal movement of the retaining member in wardly from the jamb. The hooks 13 are held in position and against displacement by the closing of the door 18, the outer edge of which abuts against the outer faces of the arms 11 and binds the same against the in ner face of the jamb 12.
It is readily seen that the retaining member and the locking pin may be conveniently carried in the pocket and when it is desired to fasten a door that the retaining member may be first positioned againstthe inner face of the jamb to extend the crotch and the eye outwardly therefrom whenthe hooks 13 are pressed into the jamb. 'I he door 13 is now closed, whereby the retainlng member is held between the door and the jamb, and the locking pin 19 is then inserted through the crotch to a distance approxlmating one-half of its length to engage the I therebetween,
opposite ends thereof against the inner faces of the door 18 and jamb 12.
The eye 10 serves as a hand-hold by which the retaining member is positioned.
Having thus described the invention what is claimedas new is 1. A door fastener including a length of wire bent upon itself and twisted to form an eye, a pair of spaced arms having a crotch and a pair of hooks formed upon the free ends of said arms, and a pin JUDSON R. MELLOTT. [L.S.]
