Description

L. A. PEALY.
LOOK. APPLICATION FILED APRA, 1913.
1,087,750. Patented Feb. 17,1914.
LAWRENCE A. FEALY, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
nosavao.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Lawrence FEALY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in locks, and more particularly that class of locks wherein the use of a key is eliminated, and has for its object to provide a door fastener which may be carried in the pocket and attached to any form of door without the necessity of use of tools or other mechanism.
Another object of my invention is to provide a lock which will securely fasten a door of the usual construction and render the entering of such door from the outside substan tially impossible.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device which may be carried by persons traveling and staying at hotels and the like, wherein there is danger of parties entering the rooms and removing valuables and the like.
With the above and other objects in view, I will now proceed to describe my invention in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view of my improved door lock, showing the same applied; Fig. 2 is a side view of my improved lock; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved lock taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 41- is a transverse sectional view of my improved lock taken on line 1lof Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 5 indicates a shank which is provided at its outer extremity with a pointed portion 6, which is extended at right angles to the shank 5 and is adapted to enter the woodwork of the door when. the device is in place. The opposite end of the shank 5 is extended and bent, as shown at 6, around a rivet or similar device 7. This rivet is pro vided at each extremity with a head 8 which is adapted to hold the same in place and prevent the parts of the look from becoming lost or misplaced.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 4, 1913.
Patented Feb. 17, 1914.
Serial No. 758,907.
The door engaging device is preferably composed of the wire 9, which is coiled around the rivet 7 as shown at 10. The opposite end of the wire 9 is extended and bent, shown at 11, to form an abutment against which the door rests when the device is in operation. A port-ion 12 is bent at right angles to the portion 11 and extended a short distance, where it is again bent to form a U-shaped member. The second bend, indicated at 13, is bent to conform to the shape of the portion 11, and provided with an extension 14 which is coiled around the shank of the rivet 7 in a manner previously described.
it will be seen, upon referring to Fig. 1, that the device is first inserted in the door jamb with the point extending into the wood. The door is next closed, whereby the point is pressed firmly into the jamb and held in a rigid position. The U-shaped member is then swung outwardly and overlies a portion of the door, and, when an attempt is made to force the door open, it will be seen that the pressure will be applied against the curved surface of the portion 11 and 13, which will, in turn, exert pressure against the rivet 7 through the means of the arm 9, which will exert pull on the shank 5 and, if the point 6 is secured firmly into the door j amb, movement of the door will be impossible. When it is desired to open the door, the Ushaped member is swung away from and out of engagement with the door jamb and the door is then opened, as no obstruc tion is placed in its way; The device may then be removed without further trouble, so that, to a person traveling, one of these devices would prove quite useful inasmuch as it may be removed and transported without the use of the usual tools" required in mounting a lock.
While in the foregoing I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, ll wish it to be understood that I may change the specific arrangements of parts without in any way departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
l-laving fully described my invention, what I claim is:
A look of the character described comprising a shank, one terminal of said shank being extended at right angles to the body portion and sharpened, the other terminal of said shank being bent to form a loop, said loop extending in the same plane as the door engaging member may be swung into 1 and out of engagement with a door.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
LAWRENCE A. FEALY.
