PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. GLOCK AND JAMES WV. I-IAWES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PORTABLE Doo -sEcURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. "781,955, dated June '7', 1904.
Application filed February 2 3, 1904. Serial No. 194,750- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES A. GLocK and J AMES W. HAwEs, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Door- Securers, of which the following is'a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in the class of devices adapted to be carried in the pocket for use more particularly by travelers as a means auxiliary to the permanent lock for temporarily securing a door from the inside of a room against entrance thereto by turning the permanent lock.
The ordinary general construction of devices of the class referred to involves a member adapted to engage at one end with the bolt-keeper, or otherwise with the door-jamb, and protrude at its opposite end beyond the latter into the room, there to be engaged by another adjustable member, which aflords a stop against the edge of the door to prevent opening it.
The object of our invention is to improve in matters of detail the portable securing device of the general construction thus outlined, thereby to simplify it and enhance its effecti'veness by rendering the connection between the members, while adjustable, rigidly secure when adjusted, and by adapting the stop mem her to operate as a wedge, and thus insure its meeting the surface of any door to which it may be applied, irrespective of variation in the thickness of doors and door-jambs that may be encountered by the user.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of our improved door-fastener with part of the chain near one end to project at a right angle from the surface and leave a bolt-opening 6. Toward the opposite end the member Ais slotted to receive a button 0, the shank of which is confined in the slot by the heads on its opposite ends, which are expanded beyond the width of the slot to prevent the button from dropping out and for engaging'the other member B with the member A, all as and for the purpose hereinafter described. As shown, three transverse slots cl, d, andd are formed in the member A, connected by a longitudinal central passage 0, and it is preferred for purposes of adjustment to provide two or more slots so connected, although it is within our invention to provide only one slot. The memher B is a plate preferably of the wedge shape one edge of the member B, the purpose of the two flanges being to adapt the device for use on a door opening at either the right-hand side or the left-hand side ofa person facing it. It is desirable to connect the members A and B to insure keeping them together when out of use, and to that end we attach them at eyes it and d on the respective members to opposite ends of a flexible connecting medium, such as a chain C. i
To apply the device, the member-A is adjusted to a doorjamb D by inserting the tongue a, into the bolt-keeper in which position the opening 6 registers with the keeper and permits the bolt to pass through it when the door is closed, thus avoiding the interposition of any obstruction between the bolt and keeper. Whether the member A is adapted thus to be applied to the jamb, as shown, or otherwise, as it may be, the slotted end protrudes beyond the jamb toward the room, and the button 0 may be adjusted into either slot to bring it into proper relation to the inner edge of the door E, which is thereupon closed with the elfect of holding the member A in place flatwise against the jamb. The member B is then applied. by slipping it at its slot f upon the shank of the button 0 behind a head thereon sufficiently far to cause it by its wedge action to meet at one of its flanges g and press against the surface of the door near its edge, whereby the door is held tightly in its closed condition and cannot rattle. Vhere the member a is applied either to a right or a left hand jamb, as it may be by properly turning it to face at its tongue-equipped side the jamb, the member B when equipped with the two flanges may be applied to the button 0 in either case at the back of the member A to position one or the other of the flanges as a stop to the door, the button shank being sufficiently longer than the thickness of the plate upon which it is confined to protrude beyond the rear surface of the plate and admit between that surface and the adjacent button-head the member B for confining it by the button-head, which extends over the edges of the slot f when straddling the shank of the button.
What We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A portable door-securer of the character described, comprising, in combination, amember adapted to engage near one end with a door-jamb and provided near its opposite end with a slot, a button confined in said slot, and a member forming a door-stop provided with a slot at which to straddle the button-shank behind a head thereon, for the purpose set forth.
2. A portable door-securer of the character described, comprising, in combination, a member adapted to engage near one end with a door-jamb and provided near its opposite end with a plurality of slots connected by a passage intersecting them, a button adjustably confined in said slots, and a member forming a door-stop provided with a slot at which to straddle the button-shank behind a head thereon, for the purpose set forth.
3. A portable door-securer of the character described, comprising, in combination, a member provided near one end with a tongue and a bolt-opening adjacent thereto and near its opposite end with a slot, at butto'nconfined in said slot, and a member forming a door-stop provided with a slot at which to straddle the button-shank behind a head thereon, for the purpose set forth.
4. A portable door-securer of the character described, comprising, in combination, a member adapted to engage near one end with a door-jamb and provided near its opposite end with a slot, abutton confined in said slot, and a .member provided with an inclined edge forming a door-stop and having a slot at which to straddle the button-shank behind a head thereon, for the purpose set forth.
5. A portable door-sccurer of the character described, coniprising, in combination, a member adapted to engage near one end with a door-jamb and provided near its opposite end with a slot, a button confined in said slot, and a member having inclined flanges on its edges forming right and left door-stops and provided between said edges with a slot at which to straddle the button-shank behind a h rad thereon, for the purpose set forth.
6. A portable door-securer of the character described, comprising, in combination, a member provided near one end with a tongue at which to engagea door-jamb and near its opposite end with a slot, a button confined in said slot, and a wedge-shaped member having inclined flanges on its opposite edges forming right and left door-stops and provided between said edges with a slot at which to straddle the button-shank behind a head thereon, for the purpose set forth.
7. A portable door-securer of the character described, comprising, in combination, a member provided near one end with a tongue and a bolt-opening adjacent thereto and ii an' its opposite end with a plurality of slots connected by a passage intersecting them, a button adjustably confined in said slots, a wedgeshaped member having inclined flanges on its opposite edges forming right and left doorstops and provided between said edges with a slot at which to straddle the button-shank behind a head thereon, and a flexible medium connecting said members together.
