ALLEN B. BROWN, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
SASH-LOGK.
Application filed August 5, 191-1.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALLEN B. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sash locks and refers particularly to means for fastening screens or storm sashes, although the invention might be used for other purposes and perform its functions in a proper manner.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a sash lock which will permit of the instant application of the sash and which will positively retain the sash and which can be readily attached or removed when found necessary and desirable.
With these objects in view my invention consists of a sash lock of the character stated and for the purpose intended embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
In order that the construction in detail and the operation of my invention may be fully understood and its many advantages be appreciated, 1 have shown in the accompanying drawings a sash lock embodying my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete lock. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation of the lock casing. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the casing plate and lock casing, the two members constituting my invention. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the cover plate of the casing. Fig. 5 represents a perspective View of the casing showing the means for retaining the pivoted lock of my device. Figs. 6 and 7 represent perspective views of the pivoted locking plate shown in unlocked and locked positions, respectively, and Fig. 8 represents a perspective View of a modified form of my device employing a rectangular casing.
Referring by numeral to the drawings in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all of the views The numeral 1 designates the window casing, and 2 designates the frame of the storm or screen sash and to the casing 1 is secured the stationary attaching plate 3, which is formed with the locking lug 4, and to the sash casing 2, is secured the casing 5, which is of semi-circular shape in cross section Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1215. Serial No. 855,084.
and its front vertical wall 6, is provided with a slot or passage 7, which leads to the entering opening of enlarged size 8, formed in the cap plate or cover 9. From this construction it will be observed that the attaching plate is secured to the window frame or casing 1, and is provided with a lug or head 1, which is adapted to enter the opening 8 of the cap plate 9, and to seat in the slot 7, in the wall 6 of said casing, and in said casing is secured the yokeshaped spring 10, which has its free arm 11 arranged in rear of said slot 7, and exerting its tension upward and provided with a locking pin 12, this spring is confined in the casing by means of the plate 13, said plate being formed with a cavity or recess 14L, in its body portion, which leads at one side to the channel 15, and at its other side to the opening 17, which is in line with the slot 7 and the enlarged opening 8, of the cap plate 9. From this construction it will be observed that the plate 13 fits within the casing 5, and that the locking pin 12, of the casing 5 extends upward through an opening 18 in said plate 13, and from Figs. 6 and 7 it will be noticed that the locking plate 19, is pivoted at 20, in the cavity of said plate and its inner end, when in unlocked position as shown in Fig. 6, retained free of the opening 17 thereof, by means of said locking pin 12, with its finger portion 19, extending out through the channel 15, said locking plate being controlled by the fiat spring 21, which has one end engaging the plate at 22, and its other end engaging the finger portion of said locking lever or plate at 23.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 8, the construction is practically identical, except that I employ a rectangular casing 24 with cover plate 25, and use an angular shaped entrance opening 26, the operation being identical with the other form of my invention.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my invention will be readily understood and it will be noted that, when the parts are in normal position the locking lever plate is in the position shown in Fig. 6, and upon bringing the lug upon the attaching plate into the entrance opening, said lug engages the spring arm 11, which engagement releases the locking pin 12 allowing the spring 21 to move the locking lever plate to the position shown in Fig. 7, confining lug 4: be-
to release the latch it is simply necessary to v move the pivoted lever plate by pressure of the thumb to one side when after the sash is removed it will be retained by the locking pin 12.
I have shown only one of the devices, but it will be understood that in use a number are employed fastened at suitable places to the window casing and sash, and it will be understood that I provide a device which will permit of the instant application or removal of the sash, which retains the sash in position under all conditions, which is of attractive appearance and simple, durable and inexpensive, thus embodying the features to insure a practical and eificient improvement of this character.
I claim 1 In combination with the casing and sash,
a platesecured to the casing and provided with a lug, a casing secured to the sash and having an opening to receive said lug, and means mounted in the casing for confining said lug within said casing, said means consisting of a spring. arranged adjacent the lug receiving opening of the casing having a locking pin, a plate mounted in said cas- ALLEN B.
