AUTOMATIC DOOR-STOP.
Application filed April 11, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. Tiroarrso), a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain useful Improvements in Automatic DoorStops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvementsin automatic door stops, one object of the invention being the provision of a simple and durable device of this character which is readily attached to the upper portion of the door and adjacent the door frame so that the door may be held open in caseof fire and be locked in such open position so as to permit free egress through the door opening.
in the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a perspective view of the upper corner of a door and the adjacent portion of a door frame equipped with the present invention, the parts being in the position assumed when the door is locked open. Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed views of the lock and stop per 86.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the door frame, and (3 the door. Attached to the upper edge of the door is a curved bar 7 which is provided with the anchoring or fastening foot 8, while the free end thereof is slidably mounted through the box or casing 9 which is provided with the attaching portion 10 so that the same may be secured by screws or other fastening 11 to the under side of the door frame. Mounted for sliding movement in the casing 9 is a spring actuated bolt 12 whose free end is Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1916.
Serial No. 90,352.
disposed in the path to engage one edge of the curved bar to enter the notch 13 thereof, and thus hold the bar with the door open. A
pull chain let is connected to the bolt and extends over the pulley 15 whose casing 17 is attached to the door frame, so that the pull cord may be freely accessible to present the ring 17 thereof for quick manipulation of the bolt. Thus when the door is thrown open, the bolt will automatically engage the bar and hold the door in open position, it being necessary to operate the pull cord to release the bolt to close the door.
This device is especially desirable in schools and factories where in case of fire, the door will be held open and against accidental closing during the egress of the occupants.
What I claim as new is An automatic door stop, comprising a guide member adapted to be secured to the head of a door frame, an arcuate shaped arm adapted to be pivoted to a swinging door and slidable through the guide and having a notch near its free end, a latch pin slidable in the guide to intersect the path of movement of the arm therein for engagement in the notch, and a spring surrounding the latch pin and acting upon the guide and said pin to automatically move the latter into latching engagement in the notch in the arm, said pin being arranged in the guide parallel with its base portion and lying in the same plane with the arm.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLES P. THOMPSON.
