Description

W. J. CLARKE.
DOOR-CHECKS.
Patented. June 27,1876.
mamas;
WITNESSES NPEIERS. PHOTO-LITHDGRAPHER. WASHMTON, D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. CLARKE, TRENTON, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,269, dated June 27, 1876; application filed May 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JOSEPH CLARKE, of Trenton, in the county of Eastings,-Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Door-Check, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved doorcheck; Fig.2, a horizontal section of the same on line 0 c, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a detail view of the toothed latch-bar.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide for doors an improved check device, by which the door may be readily retained at any position without being moved back and forth by the wind, or otherwise being released and thrown into use in an instant.
The invention consists of a toothed latchbar, raised in any suitable manner, and locked by a slide with stop-pin applied to the end of a swinging lever hinged to the door-casing, as hereinafter more fully described and definitely claimed. 7
In the drawing, A represents a door, of any size or shape; and B, a latch-bar that is pivoted to the same, and lifted for unlocking the door by a button, tongue, or other device, or by rigid lever-arms applied to the spindle of the door-lock. The latch-bar B is made in the shape of a rack at its under side, or toothed, the teeth being inclined toward the swinging end of the latch-bar. A slide-piece, O, with a stop pin or lug, a, is pivoted to the end of a v lever-arm, D, and moves along the latch-bar, when the same israised in opening the door, until, by dropping the latch-bar, the notches or teeth lock on the lug of the slide-piece, and hold the door thereby in position. The leverarm D swings in a hinged socket, b, of the door-frame, and extends, by its bent ends, into the socket and slide-piece. The door is prevented from moving until the latchbar is again lifted and the slide released from the notches of the same.
If desired, the latch-bar may be rigidly retained in locked position, or in raised position, to be disengaged from the slide, by means of pivoted pieces arranged above and below the end of the latch, near the end of the same, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The door may thus be worked without the locking of latch and slide, and be retained in perfectly reliable and easily-working manner at any desired angle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- A door-check composed of a notched or toothed latch-bar, B, incombination with a slide-piece, 0, having a stop pin or lug, a, and with a swinging slide carrying lever-arm D, hinged to the door-frame, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
