UNITE T PATENT OFFICE.

IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [89,522, dated April 17, 1877; application filed February 20, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. WHIPPLE,
of the city and county of New London, of the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door or Shutter Fasteners and do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings,.
celnber 19, 1876, and granted to me, there is described a rotary T-cat-ch, pivoted to or ap-. plied to a door, and for use with an arm furnished with a slot and mouth, and hinged to a door-casing; the object of such devices being stated in the specification of such patent. In my present improvement the T-catch is not rotary, but is to be so fastened to the door as to be immovable relatively thereto while in connection with it. This T-catch is shown at A, it having at its inner end a neck, a, provided with a head, b. The body part c of the T-catch has holes at at through it for receiving screws for securely fastening it to a door.
Furthermore, the T-catch is provided with the slotted arm-support piece C, receiving recess 0, arranged in it as shown.
The arm B, to operate with the catch-piece, is furnished with a long slot, j, openiu g out of a cross-slot or mouth, g. The said arm is pivoted or hinged to a support-piece, C, which has a shoulder or back-stop, h, to prevent the slotted arm from being turned inward over the door-opening, so as to be accidentally struck and bent or injured by the door while it may be in the act of being shut. In consequence of the recess 0, the T-catch, when the door is closed, receives the laps on the support-piece C. On turning the slotted arm into a right angle with the T-catch, the two will be put in engagement, the head of the T-catch passing through the mouth of the arm.
On the door being opened the slotted arm and the T-catch will determine the extent of the opening.
I claim- 1. The T-catch A, provided with the recess 0, arranged in it, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The support-piece C, provided with the back-stop h, in combination with the slotted arm B, pivoted to such support-piece, and arranged with the said back-stop, as shown.
3. The combination of the T-catch A, pro
vided with the recess e, with the slotted arm B and its pivotal support-piece C, provided with the back-stop h. for such arm, all arranged, constructed, and operating substantially as described and shown, for the purpose specified.
. CHARLES S. WHIPPLE. Witnesses:
