'N-PETERS, PHOYU-LITNOGRAPNER, WASKINGYON. D, C:
:NITED ST ES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES s. WHIPPLE, OE NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR 'ro HIMSELF ND GEORGE W. GODDARD, OF sAME PLAOE.
IMPROVEMENT lN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,824, dated April 17, 1877; application filed February 20, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.- 7
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. WHIPPLE, of the city and county of New London, of the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door or Shutter Fasteners; and do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section, of a door and its case with my invention applied thereto, and to the latchbolt and catch-plate of its lock. Fig. 3 is a side view of the latch-bolt. Fig. 4. is a side view of the catch-plate and the slotted arm hinged thereto.
In carrying out my invention I provide the catch-plate A of a lock with a slot or passage,
to, opening laterally out of the latch-bolt-receiving hole I) of such plate, in manner as shown; and, further, I provide the latch-bolt G of the mortise-lock B with a T-catch extended from its beveled end or part It, in man ner as shown, such T-catch being'composed of a neck, 0, and a head, d, formed andarranged as a part thereof, as represented. I also hinge to the said catch-plate, or to the casing of the door, an arm, 0, having a mouth or opening, 0, and a long slot, f, extending therefrom, all being as shown.
When the arm is back against the door frame or case, in manner as shown in Fig. 1, and the bolt-receiving recess of the door-casing is open in front, in manner as shown, the latch-bolt will operate as latch-bolts usually do in fastening or unfastening the door; but when it may be desirable to limit the opening of the door, the slotted arm should be turned into right angles with the door, in order that on the door being opened the T-catch may be put in engagement with the slotted arm.
While the latch-bolt and its catch-plate anvswer the usual purposes of such devices, the
within a certain limit, and to so fasten it open that a person on the outside of it cannot disconnect the parts of the fastening in a man- .ner to enable him to open the door sufficiently for him to enter or pass through the doorway.
I do not herein claim a T-catch and a slotted arm, as shown in the Patent No. 185,466, December 19, 1876, granted to me, I having, in carrying out my present invention, com- .bined the catch with a beveled latch-bolt, to
support and carry thecatch, all being substantially as shown and described.
I claim 1. The beveled latch-bolt Gr, constructed with the T-shaped catch 0 d, attached to and made part thereof, and arranged therewith as set forth. I
2. The latch-bolt catch-plate A, provided with the lateral passage or, leading out of its bolt-receiving orifice, as set forth.
3. The combination of the T-oatch and the latch-bolt G, connected and arranged as described, the bolt catch-plate A, provided with the lateral opening a, and the slotted arm 0, pivoted to such plate or the door-casing, all
substantially as described and shown, for the purpose specified.
CHARLES S. WHIPPLE. Witnesses:
