BURGLAR-PROOF BOLT ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN L. Corrine, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Proof Bolt Attachment-s, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to builders hardware, and more especially to bolts; and the object of the same is to apply to a bolt, particularly to one which is employed on window blinds and the like, an attachment which will prevent. it from being retracted by an unauthorized person inserting something between the slats of the blind.

In many cases the blinds are double and meet at; the transverse center of the window. In other cases one large blind covers the entire window, or it may be a slatted door which closes the door opening. In any event, the blind or blinds are often lockedin closed position by means of" a bolt on the inside. If this bolt is already 'in place my attachment may be employed across its near end. But I prefer to'manufacture the bolt and the attachment at one time, and have so described it in the following specification and illustrated it in the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of this improved bolt and its attachment,

While the members shown might be two blinds, let us assume that B is the blind closing into the frame F. A keeper 1 is secured to the inside of the frame. A base plate 2 is secured to the inside of the blind and has loops 3 upon it in which slides the bolt 4:, being moved in either direction by an appropriate handle 5. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 when moved to the left its tip enters the keeper 1 and locks the element B within the element F and when moved to the right the bolt is unlocked.

Across what We will call the inner end of the bolt I mount the attachment forming the subject matter of the present invention.

Here ,the numeral 10 designates a plate which may be separate from the base plate 2 or formed as a part thereof, according to whether this attachment is applied to a bolt already in place or is made as the bolt Specification of Letters Patent.

is made. At its upper edge this plate is turned inward at right angles in a guard 11 projecting inward for some distance and overlying the inner end of the boltand the parts yet to be described. Upstruck from ward the plate end and hold it there.

When this attachment is applied as shown, the bolt 4: cannot be retracted until the latch is first raised or moved outward from its base plate 10, and this can only be done by inserting the nail or finger behind the thumb piece 15 and pulling it forward against the tension of the spring 16. As soon as the inner end of the bolt 4 passes under the latch, the latter may be released and the bolt slides along behind it. Now

when the bolt is again projected to throw its tip into the keeper 1 its rcarend slides out from under the latch and the latter snaps against the'plate lOunder the tension of the spring 16. The important feature of my invention, however, is the guard plate 11 overlying this latch and in fact overlying and protecting everything at the inner end of the bolt; and therefore an unauthorized person can hardly insert a bent wire or the like through the slats of the blind B and slide the bolt backward, because the bolt is latched in its locked position in a manner which will be obvious. This is on the assumption that this bolt is applied to the lower cross bar of the blinds. Even if we assume that it is applied to the midrail of a slatted door and that someone might reach upward through the slats in a lower panel, the wire could hardly be manipulated so as to be passed under the latch and raise the same, and at the same time another wire introduced and borne against the handle 5 to retract the bolt. Therefore this device practically locks the bolt in closed position against the manipulation of an unauthorized person from the outside.

The foregoing description and the drawmaterials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is:
