Description

C. J. WALLIS. GATE-LATCHES.
Patented July 25,1876.
WITNESSES I "JPETERS, 'FHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER. WASNINGTON, O, (2v
UNITED] STATES PATENT OFFICE."
GIRBY J. WALLIS, OF TROY STATION, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEM ENT IN GATE-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,293, dated July 25,1876; application filed April 18, 1876.
- Be it known that I, OIRBY J. WALLIS, of
.Troy Station, in the county'of Obion and State of Tennessee have invented a new and Improved Gate-Latch, of whichthe following is a specification: v
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view; and Fig. 2, a horizontal section on line 0 c, Fig. l, of my improved gate-latch. v
The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in claim.
In the drawing, A represents a latch, that is pivoted to the door. or gate, and to a guide staple or band, B, of the same. The face of the locking-sta )le O of the joint or post of the door or gate is beveled off at the side toward the end of the latch, to admit the ready closing of the gate by passing along the block until it is carried below the same. The curved rear arm of the latch A is extended to suitablelength beyond the pivot to give the required weight for producing the automatic locking of the latch. The outer longer end of thelatch is prevented from being interfered with by the stock by a guard, E, which is made in the nature of a locking-pin. the latch is applied to doors that are to be opened from both sides, knobs F are arranged in connection with a lever, F, that serves to raise the latch by turning either knob. When thelatch is desired to be conveniently opened by persons on horseback, it is provided with an extension-rod, cord, or other device of suitable length, which the rider may readily take hold of and unlock the latch without dismounting, the gate locking itself by throwing the same into closed position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with band B, staple O, and guard E, of the curved latch A, knob F, and lever F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
OIRBY JONES WALLIS. Witnesses:
THOMAS J. BONNER, WARLER D. BAILEY.
