Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. SAR- GEANT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, having declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States, residing at Naugatuck, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a fastening device such as is used to secure window sashes against relative movement or a door against swinging.
The main object of my invention is to provide a novel, improved, inexpensive, du rable and efiicient article of this nature.
One important object is to provide such an article having a novel means for securing the locking bolt against retraction.
Another important object is to provide a device of this character having a bolt-actuating lever cooperating with a fastening element to engage the bolt to lock th bolt against retraction.
With the above and additional objects, such as will hereinafter appear, the invention has been embodied in one preferred form as hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanyin drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved lock in connection with window sash parts shown in section, and locked against relative movement;
Fig. 2 is a view of the parts of Fig. 1 showing the lock partly in section, and in open position, and
Fig. 3 is a plan or top View of ,the im proved fastening device or look in connection with a window sash fragmentarily illustrated.
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts throughout the views thereof, a casing is provided at 4, having tangs 5 through which screws or the like 6 may pass in order to mount the device or look on the top stile 7 of a window sash. At the bottom of the casing, it is open but pro vided with inwardly extending flanges 8 on which the ends of a cambered or convex leaf spring 9 rest. In the end walls of the casing, openings are provided to receive a sliding fastening bolt 10 and extended into engagement with this bolt is the central portion or crown of the spring 9. At one end the said bolt, if desired, may be provided with a nose 11, which is removably fastened through the extension of a tenon or projection 12 into a corresponding cavity 13 of the bolt. This nose is preferably made of a suitable friction material, for instance, rubber.
Integral with the casing at the top, are a pair of upwardly extending lugs 14 mounting a pivot pin 15 on which an actuating lever for the bolt, designated 16, is pivoted. This lever 16 has a lug l7 thereon which remains within a cavity 18 of the bolt.
In order to receive the bolt, a stile 19 of a window sash complemental to the sash 7 may be provided with a cavity at 20.
The free end of the actuating lever 16 is bifurcated and between the lugs provided as a result, a latch 21 is disposed, and pivoted to the lug by means of a pin 22. This latch is provided with one or more lugs 23 extending laterally therefrom and adapted to engage with one or more lugs 24: integral with the bolt 10 at one end and between which the latch moves.
In actual use, if desired, the nose 11 may be removed. In order to lock the bolt, the lever 16 is moved downwardly into the dotted line position of Fig. 2, whereupon the bolt will slide forwardly into the cavity 20 and assume the position shown in Fig. 1.
It will be realized that the spring 9 tends to force the bolt upwardly and to frictionally hold it against rattling or undue movement and especially in the position to which it may be adjusted. After the bolt has been thrown as described, the latch 21 may then be moved to the dott d line position of Fig. 2 so that the lugs 23 will extend under the lugs 24: of bolt 10. The latch thus locks the bolt in such a manner that the bolt cannot be pushed backwardly or retracted. This is especially desirable when the device is used in connection with window sashes, since rattling of one sash relative to another will not effect'the retraction of the bolt. It is obvious, that in order to retract the bolt, the latch 21 is first moved so as to disengage lugs 23 from lugs 24 and the lever 16 is then moved upwardly to the vertical position of Fig. 2, effecting the retraction.
The device has been shown by way of illustration only, in connection with window sashes. It is fastened as described, in such an instance, on one sash, and the bolt is adapted to slide or enter the recess 20 of the other sash when in the proper position.

Another very important use for the article is in connectionwith doors where they are to be locked against accidental swinging when in an open or partly opened position. The tangs 5 with such an. adaptation of the invention, could engage the door and be fastenedthereto by means of screws or the like similar to the elements 6. The bolt 10 would move vertically and the nose 11 would directly and frictionally engage the floor to prevent the swinging referredto.
Sincemerely the preferred embodiment has been illustrated and described, it is tobe understood that changes in the details may be resorted to without departing. from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

A fastening device comprising a casing, provided withan opening in each end thereof and with an opening in the top Wall thereof, a bolt slidably mounted in the opening in the ends of the casing and equipped at one extremity with a lug, an operating lever mounted upon the top Wall of the casing and having one end thereof extended into engagement with the bolt through the open ing in said top wall,.and a locking member pivotally secured to the free end of said operating member and engageable at times with the lug on the bolt to hold the latter in a projected position.
