Description

. L STEBBINS.-
Window-Fastener;
No. 224,804. PatentedFeb. 24,1880.

UNITED STATES v PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO STEBBINS, or HINSDALE, new HAMPSHIRE.
WINDOW-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,804, dated February 24, 1880. Application filed December 17, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LORENZO STEBBINs, of Hinsdale, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification- My invention relates mainly to the fastening of windows when closed, though it may Fig. 2, a side view from the left of Fig.1; a Fig. 3, a back view of the upper part as seen from the left of Fig. 2.
The same letters indicate the same parts in each.
A isa plate or frame, having a slot in which is fitted the bolt B, which is pivoted to the frame A by the pin F, and its lower end pressed out by the spring G, as shown, which allows the bolt B to be pressed back so as to be flush or smooth with the face of A.
The upper end, E, ofthe bolt B is made smaller, and extends to the button D, which has a pivot passing through the upper partof the frameA, to which is attached the bar 0, by which the button D can be turned, the bar j 0 playing in a cavity in the face of A.
The button D has one or two projections, K, with spaces so arranged that'when the a button is turned so that the space is opposite the end Ethe bolt has free play, and by turning the button D the projection K is brought case locking the bolt B out, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2," and in the former locking it in the position shown in broken lines in the same figure.
At I is a stop for the projection K to strike against to indicate the openposition with the bolt B free. The part K is made wedge form to give better work and allow for wear, though not absolutely necessary.
My improved fastener may be applied to the sash in various ways, as by putting it on an upright part of the upper sash, with the lower end of B to spring out just over the top of the lower sash, to which the piece H is attached to receive it, when, bypressing the bolt B back, either sash can be moved; or by puttingthe fastener in the casing at .theside it can be made to operate on the lower sash only.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described sash-fastener, consisting of the bolt B, pivoted at F, having an extension, E, in combination with the button D, provided with a projecting wing, K, whereby the bolt may be held securely in either its extended or retracted position, substantially as set forth.
LORENZO STEBBI'NS.
