UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. BURGESS, OF SKOWHEGAN, MAINE.
CABINET FOR SEWING AND OTHER MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,993, dated March 2, 1880.
I Application filed November 7, 1879. I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BURGESS, of Skowhega-n, of the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cabinets for Sewing or various other Machines and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the ac companying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a front elevavation, Fig. 3 an end view, and Fig. 4 a transverse section, of my improved cabinet with its door open and the sewing-machine in a po* sition for use. Fig. 5 is a top view, and Fig. 6 a transverse section, showing the positions of the parts when the desk is in position for use. Figs. 7 and 8 are views, respectively, of the top of the cabinet and the platform.
In carrying out my invention I provide the cabinet with an opening in its top, and with a platform pivoted at the middles of its opposite ends to such opening or top, so as to be reversible therein; and I provide both opening and platform with rectangular projections, whereby when one side. of the platform is uppermost viz., that side to which the sewing machine is fixed-there shall be in the top of the cabinet an opening for the driving-band of the sewing-machine to pass to the drivingpulley, which is supposed to be situated withinthe cabinet, such opening being closed when the platform is reversed, so as to bring the desk uppermost, such desk being fixed to the opposite side of the platform.
Furthermore, I combine with the reversible platform a single or sectional leaf hinged to the sewing-machine side of such platform, all being as hereinafter described.
While a desk is fixed to one side of the platform, a sewing or some other suitable machine may be fixed to the otherside of such platform, the object of the invention being to bring either the desk or machine uppermost for use, as circumstances may require.
When the platform is without the desk, but is provided with a machine only, such platform may be turned so as to carry the machine into or out of the cabinet, as may be desired,
the machine, when within the cabinet, beingx thereby protected from dust or injury.
In the drawings, A denotes the cabinet, which is supposed to be a case open in front and there provided with a door, B.
The top a of the cabinet is made with a rootangular opening, b, arranged in it, as shown in the top view in Fig. 7, such opening having at one end of it a rectangular projection, 0', whose length corresponds to about one'half the width of the opening. To this opening the'Ie is a reversible platform, 0, a top view of which is shown in Fig. 8, it'h'aving a rectangular projection, 62, extending from one end of it. This platform, arranged with the opening bin manner as'shown, is pivoted at the middles of its opposite ends to thetop of the cabinet, the pivots being represented at e e, the whole being so as to enable the platform to be turned or revolved in a manner to bring either face uppermost, the platform-projection d entering into and closing the opening or recess fin the top when the desk side of the platform is uppermost. When, however, the opposite face or machine side of the platform is uppermost, the projection (Z of the platform rests on and covers the projection c of the table-top.
To one side of the platform a writing-desk, D, is shown as fixed. a sewing-machine, E, being also represented as fastened to the opposite side.
To that side to which the machine is applied I hinge a single or sectional leaf, F. The leaf is shown as made in two parts, gh, hinged together, so that one may be folded over upon the other of them, one of such parts being hinged to the reversible platform at one edge thereof. This leaf, when one of its sections is folded on the other, may be turned over and folded on the movable platform, so as, with the machine, to be capable of being turned within the cabinet, in which'case theleaf may be held in place by a spring-latch, l, arranged as shown.
In order to support the platform when the desk sideis uppermost, there is within the cabinet, at its back, a ledge or stop, It, for the platform to rest on.
I claim as my invention as follows, viz: The cabinet provided with the opening b in its top a, and with the projection 0 arranged therewith, as set forth, in combination with
