HINGE.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY WV. BnR'rnxM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frankfort, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Hinge, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a hinge of such character that the fastening screws for the butt will lie between the axis of the hinge and the hinged member to which the other portion of the hinge is attached.
A further object of my invention is to so construct the hinge that, when applied in position to the stationary member and the member to be hinged, when said member to be hinged is in closed position, all the fastening screws, by which the hinge will be secured to the stationary member and the member to be hinged, may be placed without movement of either member' of the hinge.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invent-ion.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the hinge and adjacent supporting hinged members; Fig. 2 is a section on line 2, 2 of Fig. 1.
The drawings illustrate the hinge of a form specially designed for use in connecting a door with a comparatively narrow supporting member, the face of the door overlying and projecting forwardly from the face of the supporting member. It will be understood, however, that a variety of forms may be given to the hinge without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, 10 indicates the butt member and 11 the strap member of the hinge, both being made of sheet metal, the two members being connected by t-he usual knuckle members 12, formed by bending sheet metal blanks, and a pin 13. The butt member 10 is made from an approximately U-shaped blank, the ends of the U being bent to form the knuckles 12. The members of the hinge are so formed that the strap member 11, which is longer than the butt member 10, extends completely across the latter transversely to the hinge axis when the parts are in closed position; while the butt member 10 is wider, or of a greater dimension parallel to the hinge axis, than is Specification of Letters Patent.

The strap member 11 is appropriately shaped to properly extend over both the door 15 and the supporting member 16, and the butt member 10 to extend over the supporting member' 1G. Strap member 11 is provided with suitable screw holes 17.
In application, the door, or other lnember 15 to be hinged, is placed in closed position relative to the support-ing member 16 and the hinge, with its strap member 11 overlying the butt member 10, is applied to the supporting member 1G and door 15 in a manner clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. Thereupon all oitl the screws 18, passing through the screw holes, or the principal screw holes of the butt member, as well as the strap member, may be placed without'moving the door. This construction results in a very material saving in time of application of the hinge, as there is no need of any preliminary gaging of the parts and no need of intermediate movement.
In addition to the above advantage, it will be noticed that the hinge pin 13, by this construction, can be carried outwardly away from the door 15, thus providing a longer radius for the free end of the door and making possible a closer fit of the door. It will also be noticed that by this arrangement the position of the screw holes 14 relative to the supporting member 16 is farther away from the outer edge or surface of the supporting member 1G than is possible with the present forms of externally applied hinges where the pin lies between the butt and the door when the door is closed. By this arrangement also the inner face of the door, when opened, will be flush with the inner 'face of the support or wall 1G and therefore a bin or drawer, of full width of the door opening, may be mounted within the compartment behind the door, if desired.
