Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1905.
Application filed May 26,1905. Serial No. 262,387.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OWEN CORRIGAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Attleboro Falls, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges adapted especially for sectional bracelets and other articles of jewelry, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple and inexpensive device of this character which may be readily applied for use, one which will obviate the employment of hard solder for its attachment, and one which will limit the opening movement of the bracelet.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bracelet equipped with a hinge embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the hinge. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of one of the hinge members, and Fig. i is a similar view of the other hinge member.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a bracelet comprising a pair of sections 2, having their meeting ends connected for relative movement by means of a hinge 3, these parts, except as hereinafter explained, being of any appropriate construction and material.
The hinge 3, constituting the subject-matter of the present invention, comprises a primary member L and a secondary member 5, the members being provided with tubular body portions 6, entered, respectively, into the adjacent ends of the sections 2, which latter are of tubular form, as usual, and have the tubular portions 6 fitted snugly therein. The hinge members 4: and 5 are each composed of a single blank of sheet metal bent into shape to form the tubular body portion 6 and a projecting portion or ear 7, one of said ears being hollow to receive the other, and the ears being pivotally connected by a transverse pintle 8. The outer edge of the inclosed ear 7 is beveled, as at 9, to permit relative movement of the hinge members and to constitute a stop for limiting such movement, as is illustrated in Fig. 2.
In practice the tubular portions 6 of the hinges are entered into the ends of the elements to be connected, as heretofore explained, one of the ears 7 being seated within the other and hingedly connected thereto by means of the pintle, it being understood that the portion 6 of the hinge members may, if necessary or desirable, be attached in any suitable manner to the sections 2. Then the braceletsections are moved to open position, such movement will be limited owing to the con-.
tact of the beveled portion or stop 9 of one of the ears with the adjacent edge wall of the other.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a comparativelysimple and inexpensive device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view and one which in practice may be attached to the bracelet elements without the employment of hard solder, it being understood that in attaining these ends minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention. 7
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. A hinge of the type described comprising a pair of members each consisting of a body portion and a projecting ear, one of said ears being hollow for the reception of the other, and a pintle pivotally connecting the hinge members.
2. A hinge of the type described, comprising a pair of members each consisting of a body portion and a projecting car, one of said ears being hollow :for the reception of the other, and a pintle extended through the ears for pivotally connecting the members, one of the ears being beveled to permit relative movement of the members and constituting a stop for limiting such movement.
3. A hinge of the character described comprising a pair of members each composed of a single blank of material shaped to produce a tubular portion and a projecting ear, one of said ears being hollow for the reception of the other, and a pintle entered through the ears for pivotally connecting the members.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OWVEN CORRIGAN.
