UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATTHEW M. OMEARA AND THOMAS W.- LEAHY, 0F SUPERIOR, WISCONSIN.
COMBINED BOX-LID AND LABEL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MATTHEW M. OMEARA and THOMAS LEAHY, citizens of the United States, residing at Superior, county of Douglas, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Box-Lid and Label Holders, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to combined box lid and label holders.
The present invention has for its object the provision of a simple, neat, strong and durable device which may be quickly and easily applied to a box and the lid thereof and adjusted as may be desired to hold the box lid at any angle and to display any suitable label which is intended to indicate the price, card, or contents of the box.
The invention embodies a clamp adapted to straddle the side of the box body and of novel construction and arrangement; also, a label holder pivotally connected to said clamp and adapted to engage the box lid; and, further, new means on the clamp and the label holder whereby the two may be secured at any desired angle to each other to thereby hold the box lid in any suitable position.
One embodiment of the invention is set forth fully hereinafter. v
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective showing the invention in use; Fig. 2, a perspective of the invention itself; Fig. 3, a detail, partly in section, showing how the parts are locked together; Fig. 4, a detail of the locking catch; and Fig. 5, a detail showing how a pin may be used in place of the catch shown in Fig. 4.
Referring to Fig. 1, thebody of a box is shown at 1 and the lid at 2. The clamp of our invention is made from a thin piece of sheet metal 3 having a slot 4 provided with parallel margins and of such size that it will readily and yet snugly receive the rear wall of the box 1. On opposite sides of the clamp 3 are flanges 5 and 6 flanking the margins of the slot 4, said flanges being preferably formed by bending up the metal of the clamp and they bear against opposite sides of the back of the box and thus prevent any twisting or turning of the clamp when in position. When the clamp is in the position shown in Fig. 1, it is in the extreme corner of the box body and its upwardly extending part lies against the edge of the cover. The
clamp is provided with a comb 7 arranged on an arc and it also has one or more holes 8. Pivoted at 9 to the clamp is the brace 10 which is formed of the same piece of sheet metal with label holder 11 having the lips 12 into which any suitable label may be readily slid. Joined to the brace 10 and preferably formed of the same piece of sheet metal is the clip shown in dotted lines at 13, Fig. 1, which is,spaced back of the label holder 11 a sufficient distance to enable the clip and label holder to be made to straddle the edge of the cover. Slidable on the brace 10 is a catch 14 which is shown in detail in Fig. 4, said catch having lips 15 which em brace the brace 10 so that the catch will not become detached. An edge 16 of the catch is adapted to be entered into the notches of the comb 7 to thereby lock the brace 10 in any position to which it may be adjusted and consequently the lid 2 may be disposed at any desired angle.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the holes 8 are provided for the reception of a pin on which the edge of the brace 10 may rest and this construction may be employed in conjunction with the comb 7 and catch 14 or as an independent embodiment of the invention. The brace 10 may be provided with a hole 17 through which and through one of the holes 8 may be passed a pin or the holes 17 may be arranged in line with the notches of the comb 7 as shown at 18 in Fig. 5 and used independently of the catch 14 or in connection therewith. We wish it understood that we claim the comb 7 combined with the catch 14; the comb 7 combined with an opening such as shown at 18 with or without the catch 14; the holes 8 with or without the catch 14 and with or without the hole 17.
Our invention contemplates the combination of the clamp and the label holder pivoted thereto, together with means for looking the two in any desired adjustment and embodying a plurality of notches or apertures and a locking device cooperating with the label holder or brace and with any of said notches.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- .ters Patent, is
In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a fiat bifurcated clamp adapted to be positioned in the corner of the box, against the end thereof and straddling the rear wall thereof, said clamp having an upwardly extending part provided with a the notches aforesaid to hold the lid holder plurality of notches, a lid holder having a. in diflerent positions of adjustment.
fiat brace pivoted to the upwardly extending In testimony whereof, we hereunto aflix part of the clamp and swinging alongside of our signatures in presence of two witnesses. and parallel to it said lid holder also having MATTHEW; M O,MEARA front and rear members adapted to embrace THOMAS W AHY the edge of the lid, one of which is provided with means forvholding a label, and a catch Witnesses: slidably embracing the brace the edge of the CHAS. PEPPIATT, catch being adapted to engage with any of R0131. B. NYE.
