BAG-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,714, dated October 16, 1894.
Application tiled August 14, 1894. YSerial No. 520,316. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBAN NIKON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Christiana, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Bag- Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of bagfasteners wherein two cleats or strips are provided and attended by mechanism for clamping them against the mouth of the bag, thereby closing the same; and the object of the invention is to provide a more efficient and generally-desirable device for clamping the cleats together. This end I attain by the peculiar construction fully described hereinafter and finally embodied in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l represents av perspective view of a' bag equipped with my improvements and showing the bag open; Fig. 2, a perspective view of thesame device with the bag closed; Fig. 3, a cross-section taken through the fastener when the bag is closed.
1 indicates the bag, which may be of any form or construction, and 2 and 3 the cleats for clamping the mouth thereof. These cleats are riveted or otherwise secured to the mouth of the bag at opposite sides, and are of such a length that the bag will project beyond their ends. In closing the mouth of the bag these projected ends thereof are folded inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, thus securelyclosing the mouth of the bag. Screwed to the lower edge of the cleat 2 is the metallic strip 4., which is formed with an eye 5 in which the reduced. portion 6 of the clamp 7 is revolubly seated. The clamp 7 is U-shaped, and is arranged with its parallel arms 8 a distance apart which will make them capable of receiving the cleats 2 and 3 and the mouth of the bag, while the reduced portion 6 holds the clamp in the proper relativel position. By this arrangement the clamp is made capable of swinging in and out of engagement with the cleats in the operation of closing or opening the bag.
Formed in one arm, 8, of the clamp 7 is the screw-threaded opening 9, in which the thumb-screw 10 is arranged to operate.
1l indicates a plate which is countersunk in the outer side of the cleat 2, and which is provided with a depression 12 adapted to receive the end of the set-screw 10, and to hold the same in place. In addition to this function the plate 11 serves to protect the cleat 2 from being marred or bruised by the screw 10.
In the use of my fastener the bag, after being lled, is manipulated so that all of its mouth will beheld between the cleats 2 and 3, after which operation the clamp 7 is swung around so thatv its arms 8 will lie one on each side of the cleats. The fastening operation is now completed by tightening the screw 10, which will canse the two cleats to bind against each other, thus making the accidental opening of the bag an impossibility. To open the bag, the screw 10 should be released, which will permit thecleats l0 tobe moved apart, thus opening the mouth.
Various changes in the size, proportion and arrangement of the parts of my invention may be resorted to without departing from the substance thereof. Therefore, I desire it understood that I am not restricted to the precise construction herein shown, but am entitled to all such variations as come within the above definition. l
Having described my invention, I claiml. The combination with a bag, of two vertically-disposed cleats secured one to each opposite side thereof and adapted to be pressed against the sides of the bag so as to close the same, a U-shaped clip pivotally connected to the lower edge of one of the cleats and capable of embracing the two cleats and a portion of the cloth composing the bag and of folding said cloth up against the outside of one cleat and holding it so, and a set-screw for clamping the clip in place, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a bag, of two vertically-disposed cleats secured one to each opposite side of the bag, a box fixed to the under side ofr one cleat, a U-sh-aped clip pivotally mounted in the box and capable of em-A bracing the cleats and of clamping them In testimony that I claim the foregoing as xo against the bag, a set-screw in one arm of lche my own I have hereto affixed my signature in clip and` for clamping the same against the the presence of two witnesses.
bag, and a facing plate secured to the cleat which is adjacent to the set-screw, against i ALBAN NIXON. which the set-screw is adapted to bear, the
facing plate having a recess therein adapted Witnesses:
for the reception of the point of the set-screw, FRANK C. MCGOWAN,
substantially as described. D. DONOGHUE.
