Be it known that I, WILLIAM PARKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frazeysburg, in the county of Muskingum and State 'of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Bag- Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates tofastening means for bags, sacks, packages, or the like wherein is employed an Yencircling flexible member or band; and the object of the same is to produce a device comprising a member carried by the flexible encircling member or band and a coperating locking member movable toward and away from the encircling band in a direction transversely to the strain thereof, the locking and flexible members being each provided with outer engaging portions.

A further object isl to provide means for holding the members into positive engagement'with each other to prevent accidental displacement of the same.

To these ends my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts of a bag-fastener, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated my preferred form only.

Similar numerals designate like parts throughout the several views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device applied to a bag; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a horizon-tal section, and Fig. 4 a detail perspective view, of the locking member.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a flexible member or encircling band, which may be of any suitable material; but I have preferably illustrated the same as being a strap which is adapted to surround the articlevto be fastened. For the purpose of illustration 1 have shown the samel as being applied to the mouth of a sack or bag 2 for closing the same.

The numeral 3 designates a plate or member carried by one end of the band 1 and may be secured thereto in any desired manner,

such as by rivets 4 or any other fastening means. Secured to the member or plate 3 and disposed at a substantially right angle thereto is a loop or eye 5 of any desired size and shape, and 6 designates a locking member adapted to be moved toward and away from the plate or member 3. Said plate or locking member 6 is provided with apertures or openings 7, through which the legs or sides of the loop or eye 5 pass to allow the said locking member to move toward and away from the member 3 and to prevent longitudinal movement of the same. Secured to the lower face of the locking member 6 is a projection or rib 8, and 9 designates an upwardlyprojecting portion or ear, preferably disposed in a parallel relation to the eye or loop 5, and said projection is provided near its upper extremity with an aperture or opening 10 for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. Secured to the band 1 at any desired point intermediate ofits ends and remote from the member 3 is a plate 1l, which is provided with any desired number ofl projections or ribs 12.Y These projections may be formed on the plate 11 in any desired manner; but I have preferably shown them as being stamped or bent up from the body portion.

Having thus lfully described the construction of my invention, the operation of the same is as follows: The band or member 1 is placed around the article to be fastened. If the article is a bag, the member 3 may, if desired, be first fastened thereto by means of the apertures 13, yalthough this is not necessary. The locking member 6 is then raised as far as possible toward the top of the eye orloop 5. The free end of the band or flexible member 1 is thenl passed beneath thev locking member 6, and Vtension is exerted until the band tightly surrounds the article, the plate 11 being so arranged that when the proper strain has been produced it will stand beneath the locking member 6. This member 6 is then forced down until the rib or projection 8 contacts with the plate or, member 3 and in front of one of the lugs or projections 12 on the plate 11. The projection or ear 9, carried by the locking member 6, is of a sufficient height that when the rib 8 contacts with the plate l1 the aperture or opening l0 will stand just below the top of the eye or loop `5, and the shackle 14 of an ordinary padlock 15 is then passed through the opening 10 and beneath the top of the loop or eye 5 and locked. It will be seen that with this construction the shackle of the lock prevents any transverse movement of the locking member 6, thereby positively holding the encircling band l from slipping, and the legs or sides of the eye or loop 5 prevent any longitudinal movement of the said locking member. Obviously this construction may be somewhat changed Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and, if desired, an ordinary seal or other locking means may be used in place of the padlock.

In order to insure and facilitate the easy insertion of the 'flexible member or band l between the locking member G and the member 3, l have illustrated the edges of the said locking member 6 as being slightly turned upward, as at 1G.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a tie or band, of afastening device havingjaws between which the tie or band is interposed, and one of which is movable toward and from the other in a direction transverse to the line of strain applied to the tie or band, said band and one ofA the jaws being iiat and the other having interlocking projections, and means for securing the jaws in a iixed relative position.

2. The combination with a tie or band, of a fastening device having jaws between which the tie or band is interposed and one of which is movable toward and from the other in a direction transverse to the line of strain applied to the tie or band, the movable jaw being provided with projections and the tie or band having a plate attached thereto and provided with projections adapted to engage with the projections on the movable jaw, and means foi-securingthejaws in fixed relative position.

3. A device of the class described comprising an encircling member, and a transverselymovable locking member carried by one end thereof, the free end of the encircling member and the locking member, each being provided with interengaging projections, and means for holding the said portions in contact with each other.

4. A device ofthe class described, comprising an encircling member, an eye carried by one end thereof, a locking member engaging said eye and movable transversely to the strain of the encircling member, interengaging portions carried by the encircling and locking members, and means engaging the eye and locking member for holding the interengaging portions in contact with each other.

l5. A device of the class described comprising an encircling member, an eye carried by one end thereof, a locking member movable on said eye in a direction transverse to the strain of the encircling member, interengaging portions carried by the encircling and locking members, an eye carried by the locking member, and means for engaging the said eyes to hold the interengaging portions in contact with each other.

6. A device of the class described comprising an encircling member, a guide carried by one end thereof and disposed at a substantially right angle thereto, a locking member movable on said guide, an ear carried by the locking member, substantially parallel tothe guide, said ear being provided with an aperture, interengaging portions carried by the locking and encircling members, and means engaging the guide and, ear for holding tho interengaging portions in position.

7. The combination with a bag, a plate secured thereto, an encircling member secured to said plate, and a guide carried by the plate, of a locking member movable on said guide in a direction transverse to the strain of the encircling member, an eye carried by the locking member, said encircling memberbeing adapted to be clamped between the plate and locking member, means engaging the eye and guide for holding the parts into positive engagement, and means for preventing the longitudinal displacement of the locking andencircling members.
