To all whom it may concern:

lle it known that I, CHARLES A. Coxaaao, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvemcnts in Fasteners, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the characters of rel'crence"marked thereon.

My invention relates to fasteners wherein it is desired to secure a cord or the like temporarily, and while said fastener may. be used for various purposes,'it is especially adapted for securing packages such as packages of mail.

The object of my invention is to provide a reliable means for fastening the end ota cord or the like, without tying a knot and which maybe released without injury to the cord, whereby the same may be used over again.

The invention is an improvement upon the fastener shown and described in my copending application Serial Number 376,957, tiled June 3, 1907.

The invention consists in. the parts and arrangements hereinafter shown, described and set; forth in the claims.

My improved fastener comprises a lower plate 1, which may be of any desired shape andfwl'iich is provided with an opening 2 The plate 1 is also provided with an opening 4, througl'i which extends a headed rivet 5. The shank of the rivet 5 as shown in Fig. 2 is slightly smaller than the opening 4- in the plate 1.

The upper plate (3 is provided with an opening 7 and the. rivet 5 passes through the opening 7 in the plate ti. The opening 7 is preferably of such siz as to tightly grasp the shank of the rivet. The rivet is provided at one end with the usual head which engages the outer face of ore of said plates and the other end of the rivet is secured in the usual way by a washer or the like, which engages the outer face of the other plate. The distance between the two heads of the rivet is such that the upper and lower plates may be spaced from each other. The parts are preferably so proportioned that when the lower plate is placed upon the package as shown lll .Fig. 2, and the rivet headthus brought in contact with the outer face of the lower plate, the upper plate which is rigidly secured to the rivet is raised from the lower plate a distance so that the fastening cord may be readily inserted between said plates. In order to facilitate the insertion of the cord between said plates, I have provided the upper plate with a beveled edge 8.

The plate 1 has the opening t so located therein that said plate extends some distance beyond the outer edge of the upper plate 6. in the operation of my device, in wrapping a package such as shown in Fig. 1, the plate is placed upon a package and as the rivet head comey in contact with the package, the same will be brought-into-contact. with the under surtace of the lower plate and the upper plate which is rigidly connected to the rivet will be raised from the lower plate. The thumb of the operator is placed upon the extension of the lower plate and thereby the lower plate may be firmly held in tlitBJXHltlOli desired on said package. The cord l Ii(J\V carried around the package lengthwise of said package as shown in Fig. l and inserted between said plates. The plates which are spaced at this time readily allow the insertion of the cord there-between and the beveled edge of the upper plate also assists in properly inserting the cord. The cord is now positioned as shown in Fig. 3 and the plate will tilt slightly as shown at :v-ae in said figure, allowing the cord to move freely between the two plates. The cord is then brought about the ackage in a direction at right angles to the rst winding of the cord and said cord is again brought between the upper and lower plates as shown in'Fig. 1.' A pull upon the cord will now lock sald cord to the fastening device. If desired, the cord may be wound again between the plates insuring a still firmer looking of the cord to the fastening device.

' While I have shown the opening in the lower plate as circular in form, it is obvious that said opening may be of any other desired form.

Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure 1) Letters Patent is l. A astener including a lower plate, an

A fastener including a lower plate, an upper plate, and a rivet passing through said upper and lower plates, said rivet ting loosely the opening in the lower plate, whereby said upper plate may be tilted rela: tively to the lower plate, and said lower plate being provided with an extending portion which may be grasped to hold the fastener while tying a package.
