T. L. RIVERS.
HINGE.
A N0.`276,540. Patented A111224, 1883.`
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS L. RIVERS, OE MOUNT VERNON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OE ONE-THIRD TO EDWARD M. SHEPHERD, OE SAME PLAOE.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,540, dated April 24, v1883. V Application filed January 5, 1883. (Model.)
Z'o all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. RIVERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Jefferson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Hinge, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to hinges of that class which are double-jointed and non-projecting; and it consists in certain improvements inthe construction and arrangement of parts.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a joint having my improved hinge. Fig. 2 is a like view taken from the inner side. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof. Fig. 4 is an end view of the hinge detached.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the hinge, which is formed with a back plate, B, to which is hinged at each side edge, C C, a plate, D, by which the hinge is secured in position. These joints Eat the junction ot' the hack of the hinge and the securing-plates at each side, may be formed in any ordinary or suitable manner.A
To the outer face of each securing-plate D is secured an auxiliary plate, F, having its edge projecting from the plate D at its joint E, so as to form a ange, G, as shown. This ange G forms a stop to the movement of the plate D, to which it is secured, by engaging the hack plate, B, when the hinge is turned to the po-. sition shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3 of the drawings, and, by reason of this engagement, causes the joint E at the other side ot' the hinge to operate when it is desired to turn the hinge tothe positionshown in dotted lines, Fig. 4 of the drawings.
H designates a T-plate, the stem I ot' which extends between the joints E E, while its head J forms aninterior plate corresponding to the plate B. The head J of the T-plate is of sufiicient width to enable its side edges, K K, to
, form stops for the securing-plates D D when the hinge is closed; and by reason of this engagement with the said plates D D the hinge will close squarely and neatly, and the plates D D cannot be forced further linwardly by the weight of the boards or strips to which the hinge is secured.
My improved hinge is secured to the adjoining edges L L of the portions M M, to be hinged together by screwsN or their equivalent, which pass through the securing-plates D D, a plate, O, being also preferably interposed between the heads of the screws and the inner surface of the plate D. Mortises P P are formed, one in each edge L, to receive the half Ot' the hinge at that side.
The operation and advantages ot' my invention are obvious. The hinge is simple and. durable in construction, and it can be manufactured at a comparatively minimum cost.
Itis evident that the iiange G can be formed iptegral with the securing-plate D, in which case the plate F is dispeusedwith.
Iam aware that hinges of this double-jointed non-projecting construction have been heretofore made with a back plate to which are hinged the securing-plates, which latter are provided with lugs that engage the back plate, such a construction and arrangement being shown in the patent to Pfantz and Franck, No. 255,809, April 4, 1882.
I am also aware Ot' the patent to Morgan, No. 232,747, September 28, 1880 5 but I do not wish to be understood as claiming broadly the invention embodied in either of these patents, my claim being for my own novel construction and arrangement of parts.
VI claim as my invention- As an improvement in non-projecting hinges, the combination ofthe back plate, B, the plates D I), hinged to each side the plate B, and serving to secure the hinge in position, the iianges or extensions G, projecting above the plates D D, and arranged to engage the outer face of the back plate, B, and the T-plate H,
having its head J, forming an interior plate,
extending across the hinge from sido to side, and serving to provide stops for the plates D D when the hinge is closed, and having its stem I extending up betweenthe joints ot' the plate B and plates D D to the former, and Serving to secure the said back plate and interior plate or head J together, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS L. RIVERS.
