UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE W. SAWYER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T EDWARD C. BAUMANN, OF1VIILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
i GATE-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 6, 1910.
Application filed April 16, 1910. Serial No. '555,943.
i following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. j
My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out 1n the claims of this specification, its object beizo ing to provide simple, economical and durable gate-hinges that may be readily applied.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a partly sectional side elevation of a fragment of a gate and post connected by hinges in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a plan view of a detail of the structure partly in horizontal section on the plane indicated by line LQ-2 in Fig. l; Fig. 3, a transverse section of the saine indicated by line 3-3 in Fig. 1, and Fig. l, a horizontal section of another detail of the structure looking upward, this view being indicated by line 4.-4 in Fig. 1.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 5 indicates a gate-post, 6 each of a series of horizontal gate 'slats at suitable intervals j apart and 7 each of a pair of parallel vertical tie-bars between which the Gate-slats are fastened adjacent to said post in which the gate-hooks 8 are driven. The tie-bars may be of wood or metal, plain or flanged, but it is preferable, as herein shown, to employ right-angled metal strips of suitable thickness, the same being bolted or otherwise rigidly secured in connection with the gateslats.
The leaf of each gate-hinge herein shown is a casting having a flat portion 9 that abuts an edge of a gate-Slat, and an eyeshank portion 10 that extends vertically beyond the flat portion aforesaid to abut the inner end of said gate-Slat, this shank being preferably provided with a notched lug 11 adjacent to said inner end of the aforesaid gate-Slat. The leaf is also provided with a longitudinal.stiening-rib l2, and a pair lof parallel ears 13 that are bolted or otherwise fastened to the sides of the gate-Slat, these ears being adjacent to the outer end of said leaf. The leaf is further provided with a pair of outwardly channeled, inwardly flat, arms 1i that extend at right angles from said leaf adjacent to the eye-shank portion 10 of saine in a direction opposite that of said ears that are also at right angles to said leaf. The channels of the leaf-arins 14 have close litnpon the tie-bars 7 of the gate to which said arms are bolted or otherwise rigidly secured.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the leaf of each hinge straddles the gate-Slat to which it is attached, and may abut the inner end o-f said slat. It also straddles tie-bars of the gate to which it is fastened. Hence the unions of the hinge leaves and said gate are very rigid and not liable to loosen under the various conditions to which they will be ordinarily subjected, while at the same time sagging of the aforesaid gate on the gate-hooks is prevented because of the rigidity of said unions.
The gate-hook 8 of each hinge does not differ from those of ordinary construction, except that it is preferably provided with a forward flange 15 for engagement with the notch in the lug 1l of the leaf when the gate is closed, this engagement serving to prevent a lift of said gate to separate the same from the post 5 in which the gate-hooks are driven.
The hinge-leaves may be so disposed that each of them will have engagement of its notched lug l1 with a gate-hook flange 16 when the gate is closed, or they may be arranged as herein shown to have only one of them effect such an engagement, and it is obvious that a solid block having channeled sides may be employed instead of the hingeleaf arms herein shown and described, these arms being virtually the remainder of such a block centrally recessed to lighten the same.
I claim:
1. A fate-hinge having the leaf thereof provided with vertically extendin channelarms adjacent to the eye-shank o4 same for the engagement of vertical tie-bars of a gate to which they are attachable, said leaf being also attachable to a gate-Slat against an edge of same.
2. A gate-hinge having the leaf thereofl provided with vertically extending channelarms adjacent to the eye-shank of saine for the engagement of vertical tie-bars of a gate to which they are attachable, and also protie-bars of al gate-to which they arev attachable. 4
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in l5 the county of Milwaukee and State of fsconsin in the presence of tWo Witnesses.Y
