G. BOLAND.
SPRING HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED act. 23. 19H.

GUSTAVE BOLAND, OF SAN JOSE CALIFORNIA.
SPRING-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1915.
Application filed October 28, 1914. Serial No. 868,290.
4 To all whom it may concern:
ago.
Be it known that I, GUs'rAvn BOLAND, a.
citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to self-closing doors, windows and the like.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple, inexpensive and easily installed mounting and closure such as a window, door, screen, gate, etc.
The invention consists of the parts and the combination and construction of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention showing its application to a door. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective of a panel door and its mountmg.
2 indicates a screen closure having a tubular frame 3 over which is laid the screen material 4, which is bound by a frame work of heading or molding 5. To the inside molding is .secured a cushioning strip 6 adapted to lie flush up against the adjacent structure A covered by the frame and make a snug joint. The frame 3 is mounted upon the supporting structure by means of spring hinges comprising a center pintle 7 upon which is mounted coil springs 8 each with oppositely extending ends 910. The ends 10 enter the tubular frame and hook in holes 11 therein; the ends 9 slide into holes 12 made in the permanent structure A and which may have metal bushings 13. To prevent lateral play of the closure, the hinge pin 7 carries a spring hook 14 attachable to a projection 15 or equivalent keeper on the structure A. Thus the mounting has the dual function of a hanger and automatic closure for the part 2; which it is understood is but representative of any desired member to be closed and may be of any suitable material.
In Fig. 4 an ordinary wooden door is illustrated. In this case the spring ends 10 slide into holes 11' and the pintle 7 is hooked to the door.
Fig. 3 illustrates a metallic molding 5 clamping the strip 6.
In operation when the closure 2 is swung outward the springs 8 are tensioned and operate to swing the closure back when it is released.
While I have shown the invention as applied to a screen, it is manifest that it is capable of a variety of uses in a variety of forms and I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the specific construction nor the specific application.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination with a permanent structure with an opening and a closure for the opening, and having holes formed in its edge, of a mounting connecting the closure and said structure for relative pivotal movement, said mounting including a pintle,-
coil springs with oppositely extending ends those on one side'engaging the permanent structure and the other engaging the closure by insertion in said holes, and spring hooks connecting the pintle to the closure and to said structure, said structure having apertures for its respective ends of the springs.
2. A mounting for closures of openings in a permanent part, comprising a hinge with a pintle, springs on the pintle detachably interlocking with said closure and part, and spring hooks connected to the pintle, said hooks connecting the pintle to the closure and to said part to prevent relative shifting.
3. In combination, a door, ajamb, a pintle, a plurality of coil springs mounted on said pintle and connected at one end to the door and at the other end to the jamb, said springs serving as the sole hinge support for the door and acting also to automatically close the same, and means for holding said pintle against lateral movement.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence oftwo subscribing witnesses.
GUSTAVE BOLAND.
