l"Gables and 34'are connected to tliecol'- lars 29 on the stub shafts 24, extending upwardly through the slots 28 over the pulleys 30 and 31 respectively. The edges of the slots 28 are rounded in order to permit free movement of the cables and prevent binding regardless of the position of the door sections in order to insure a free operating action. The cable 33 extends along the horizontal beam 12 and over pulley 32. The free ends of the cables are secured to an equalizing bar 35whichis pivoted at its Y center to an operating handle 36 and a series of plates k37. The plates serve as a counter-balance for the door and are housed in the column 1l. The plates 37 may be varied in number according to the Weight necessary for the counterbalance which depends on the weight of the door. The outer plates are provided with rollers 38 to insure free movement and prevent binding of the counterbalance in its travel. A slot 39 is provided in the column 11 from which the handle 36 projects and slides as the door is operated.
In order to completely seal the door from outside elements and for the neat appearance of the door, angle closing plates 40 are provided. .These plates consist of two flanges at right angles to each other, The upper portion of the flange parallel to the door facing is provided with a slot 41 adapted to be secured beneath the spring-pressed pin 23. The other pin 22 is adapted to frictionally engage this flange at its other end. The other flange completely covers the cut-out portions and rests against the channel plates 19 and slides under the pin 23 as the door is operated.
Therdoor may be locked by mechanism mounted to be operable from either side comprising a casing 42 provided with a rotatable disk 43 mounted in its face having a hand grip 44 secured to the outside thereof and an inwardly projecting plate 45 on the other side and of sufficient length to be engaged by a similar hand grip 58 on the other side of the door. A pair ofoperating plates 46 is mounted inthe casing and is provided with tabs 47 which project from the sides of the casing through suitable openings. The plates 46 are further provided with flanges 48 resting on each side of the plate 45. A rod 49. projects through the flanges 48 and the plate 45 and is keyed at 50 to each side of the casing. Springs 51 are mounted between the flanges 48 and the sides of the. casing for holding the flanges 48 against theprojecting plates 45.
Attached to the tabs 47 are rods 52 which extend to the spring-pressed plunger latches 53 andare properly tensioned by the couplings 54. A lock 55 is secured to the lower side of the casing 42 and is provided with a plunger 5.6 which engages the slots 57 in the operating plates 46 to lock them in fixed position. It will be noted that by turning the handle either to the right or left the rods will be actuated.
The plungers 53 engage suitable catches 59 mounted on the sides of the door for holding the sections in place. Small rubber bumpers 60 may be secured on the sections to prevent injury to the sections or the locking mechanism as the door sections are folded together.
The operation of the door is as follows:
Considering the door is in closed position as shown in Figure 1, by simply grasping the handle on either side and turning it in either direction, the plungers 53 are released from the catches 59 and by slight pull on the handle the door sections will break and being of such construction and so well balanced the door is easily raised to open or folded position with little effort on the part of the operator.
It will be noted that the handle 36 on the counterbalance is now in lowered position. To close the door the operator simply raises this handle and the sections unfold. As the bottom section nears its final position, the rollers on the stub shafts 24 tend to press against the inner plates 18 of the channel guides and the rollers 27 against the plate 19 of the channel guide thereby binding the bottom section in fixed position which prevents swinging or rattling of this section, as is usually the case in doors of otherv constructions. This particular feature is accomplished by having the lower shaft 24 slightly displaced inwardly with respect to the line of center of shaft 26. As the door reaches its final position the latches snap into position. Y
In closing or opening the door the closinor plates 40 slide alon the outer channel plates 19 and are hefd in position by the action of the spring pressed pins in their travel. Y From the foregoing it will be seen that my door is simple in structure, easily assembled and with parts interchangeable to suit particular installations and a door that requires scarcely any effort on the part of the operator and above all a well constructed door suitable for varied purposes and with special features not found in doors as vheretofore constructed.
It may be observed that with two cables there is also little or no danger of injury should one cable break since the other cable is ofV sufficient strength to hold the sections in any position.
It will be obvious to l'those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but only as indicated by the appended claims.
Having thus full described my `said inn vention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. The combination with a folding door formed of'a plurality of sections hinged together, of plates forming guide channels mounted on each side ofthe door, the outer plate being of a width suliicient to extend over the edge of the sections to form a tight it, guide elements mounted on the edges ofv the bottom and intermediate sections on each side of the hinged joint and extending into said channels, the guide element on the bottom section being displaced inwardly with respect to the guide element on the inter-V mediate section and adapted to press against the inner plate when Vthe door is in closed position thereby preventing swinging of the bottom section of said door, substantially as set forth. Y
2. In a` folding door comprising a frame, a plurality of sections hinged together, the
upper section being hinged to the top of Veo said frame and the lower sections being provided with cut-out portions on the edge adwardly projecting pins and outwardly p rojecting guide elements, said pins resiliently engaging said cut-out portions and an angled plate having one flange extending over the opening formed by the cut-out portions for closing the same mounted beneath said pins, substantially as set forth.
3. In a folding door comprising a frame, a plurality of sections hinged together, the upper section being hinged to the top of said frame, the bottom and intermediate sections provided with cut-out portions on the edges thereof adjacent the hinged connection, plates secured to the edges of said sections provided with outwardly projecting guides and inwardly projecting pins, angled plates pivotally secured at oneend by the pins on the intermediate sections and slidably secured under the pins on the bottom section for covering the opening formed by the cut-out edges and a system of weighted cables and pul eys for counterbalancing said door fixed to said guides, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Washington, D. C., this 17th day of June, A. I). nineteen hundred and thirty-one. j MARSHALL E. CRUME..4
