This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a hinge mounting for doors, and has special reference to the mounting of doors of refrigerators.
Itis well known that, in constant use, doors which are hinged to cover openingsin walls or casings are often in such constant use that the. sealing effect of the door with respect to the wall deteriorates and becomes non-effective in a short time. This is especially true of modern refrigeration apparatus where the cooling efficiency of the apparatus is seriously impaired if the air seals are notlmaintained at all times. However the average person'totighten such a seal has to call in a workman with the consequent loss of time and involved. expense.
The object of this invention, therefore, is to enable the ordinary householder, when his refrigerator, or other door, has lost its proper sealing contact with the associated casing, to easily, quickly, and with practically no eifort,,adjust the door so as to restore the proper sealing relation. This ability not'only saves time and expense for workmen but also saves electric bills for power wasteduntil the apparatus is fixed. This device enables the fixing to be achievedin-a few minutes at the most.
Briefly and generally the invention has to do with a door to be disposed in sealing relation to a wall with a suitable hinge connecting the wall and the door, with cooperative means on the door and the hinge adjustable to allow the door to be adjusted with respect to the hinge, so that it can be moved into tighter sealing relation to the wall.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings which show the present preferred form thereof, and in which,

Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the hinge and a fragment of the door;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the hinge and door; and, s
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
The present preferred form which the invention may assume is illustrated in the drawings and is especially shown as applied to a door of a modern refrigerator, although, of course, it is to be understood that the invention will equally well apply where there is an opening to be closed by a door pivotally hinged thereon.
D represents the regular commercial type of refrigerator door with a forward layer or peripheral ring of gasket l0. l2 represents the wall or 2 casing :of an outer frame which could be the front wall. of the refrigerator.
A-hinge generally enumerated as H is made up of two-parts, or leaf members, one part l3, having a right-angled extension portion M, is fixed tothe wall'or casing l2 by means of bolts I8. Theother part l5, having a right-angled extension portion. 16, is fastened to the door D by means of bolts 20. A hinge pin 22 in the usual mannerpermits the extension portion It to swing or; pivot withrespect to the fixed hinge extension' portion HL. It is to be noticed that the pivoted hinge part I5 is of a right-angled shape as shown clearly in Figure 1, so that when the door D is closedthe pivot point of the hinge is off-set to oneside of the adjacent wall of the door D.
In the side of the door D adjacent the hinge isarecess fl t in which is set a flat anchor plate 25 which at its front end near the wall I2 has a lip 21 extending at a right angle to the said recess and parallel with said extension portion I6. This lipi'l is provided toact as a stop surface for an adjusting screw 29 which is screw-threadedly mounted in the said extension portion l6, and is held in any adjusted position by a check nut 30. Said anchor plate 25 has two holes therein, later described.
In the hinge part 5 which lies against the anchor plate 25 on the side face of the door D are provided laterally extending spaced slots 32 to receive the bolts 20, which also extend through said anchor plate holes and into said door D as shown in said Figures 1 and 2, so that the door D can be moved with respect to said part I5 as it becomes necessary to adjust the door.
When it becomes necessary to readjust the parts to make more secure the seal between the gasket portion ID of the door D and the abutting face of the wall l2, it is first necessary to loosen the bolts 20. The check nut 30 is then backed off a little and the screw 29 is then advanced against the lip 21 to press thereagainst whereby the door is moved forward with respect to the extension portion of the hinge l6 and the seal betweentheinsulation l0 and the wall or casing I2 is made as tight as desired. After this is accomplished, then the check nut 30 is tightened again, the bolts 20 are tightened up, and the parts are now in their new and adjusted position, This can be repeated at intervals as the seal above mentioned occasionally becomes broken with the wear and tear on the parts in constant use and the opening and closing of the door.
It will therefore be obvious that I have provided a very simple, efiicient, durable, easily manipulable, and inexpensive device whereby the above mentioned objects are readily overcome and with the expenditure of a minimum of time and eifort so that any one can make the desired adjustments without calling in a workman.
While the invention has been described in detail and with respect to a present preferred form which the invention may assume, it is not to be limited to such details and form since many changes and modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in its broadest aspects. Hence it is desired to cover any and all forms and modifications of the invention which may come within the language or scope of any one or more of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A hinge mounting adapted to connect a wall and a door comprising a hinge embodying two parts adapted to be operatively connected respectively to said wall and said door, each said part embodying an extension portion extending at an angle to the adjacent portion of said part, a pin hingedly connecting said extension portions together, one said hinge part being adapted to be adjustably connected to said door and having a laterally extending slot, an anchor'plate having a hole therein, a bolt adapted to extend through said slot and hole, and a nut therefor to removably hold said plate and said lattermentioned hinge part to said door, said anchor plate embodying a lip portion extending at an angle to the adjoining portion of said plate, said extension portion of said latter-mentioned hinge part having a screw threaded hole therein that is directly opposite said lip portion, and a screw threaded member screw-threadedly connected in said hole and adapted uponmovement thereof to contact said lip portion and cause relative movement between said wall and door.
2. A hinge mounting adapted to connect a wall and a door comprising a hinge embodying two parts adapted to be operatively connected respectively to said wall and said door, each said part embodying an extension portion extending at substantially a right angle to the adjacent portion of said part, a pin hingedly connecting 4 said extension portions together, one said hinge part adapted to be adjustably connected to said door and having a laterally extending slot, an anchor plate having a hole therein, a, bolt adapted to extend through said slot and hole and a nut therefor to removably hold said plate and said latter-mentioned hinge part to said door, said anchor plate embodying a lip portion extending parallel with said extension portion of the latter-mentioned part, and at an angle to the adjoining portion of said plate, said extension portion of said latter-mentioned hinge part having a screw threaded hole therein that is directly opposite said lip portion, and a screw threaded member extending parallel with said slot and screw-threadedly connected to said hole and adapted upon movement thereof to contact saidlip portion and cause relative movement between said wall and door.
3. A hinge mounting comprising a hinge embodying two leaf members movably connected together, one said leaf member embodying two portions extending angularly to each other, one said portion having a slot therein, a separate member having an opening and embodying a lip portion projecting at an angle to the adjoining portion of said separate member, a pin member adapted to extend through said slot and opening to hold said separate member adjoining portion in close association with said slotted leaf member portion, and an adjusting member movably mounted on the ther portion of said lattermentioned leaf member and extending towards and adapted to be moved into contact with said lip portion to thereby effect movement'between said leaf member having said slotted p rtion and said separate member.
