SHOWER DOOR HANDLE Filed Oct. 26, 1956 m m g w a 1.74 H 44. Z2 m1 5 5 2,904,368 SHOWER DOOR HANDLE Samuel Taubman, Detroit, Mich. Application October 26, 1956, Serial No. 618,597 2 Claims. (Cl. 292-347) The present invention relates to an improved shower door handle.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved shower door handle which is simple in design, easy of installation, and eflicient in operation.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a shower door handle adapted to be rigidly aflixed to the shower door frame by a single screw element.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide a shower door handle which has locking shoulder means adapted to engage an edge of the shower door frame and co-operate with a screw extending through the shower door frame to rigidly hold the shower door handle against turning movement relative to the shower door frame and thereby avoid loosening of the screw means which would result from rotation of the handle relative to the door frame about the axis of the screw means.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide an improved shower door construction including a pair of shower door handles disposed at opposite sides of a shower door frame member which so engage and fit the shower door frame member that a single screw element, extending through one of the handle members and the frame member, and threaded into the other handle frame member, rigidly holds both handle members against turning movement relative to the frame member.
Other and more detailed objects of the invention will be apparent froma consideration of the following specification, the appended claims, and the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a broken front elevational view of a shower door showing a shower door handle constructed accord ing to the present invention mounted on the shower door frame;
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the structure illustrated in Figure 1, taken along the line 2-2 thereof; and,
Figure 3 is a broken enlarged sectional view of that portion of the structure illustrated in Figure 2 indicated by the circle 3.
Referring to the drawing, the shower door frame mem ber is generally channel-shaped as best illustrated in Figure 2 and is provided with a pair of horizontally spaced flanges 12 and 14, between which is received the edge portion of a glass panel 16. A seal between the frame member 10 and the glass panel 16 is provided by a channel-shaped rubber sealing member 18 which fits over the edge portion of the glass panel 16 and is received between the flanges 12 and 14 of the frame member 10.
The frame member flanges 12 and 14 have vertically extending inner edge portions 20 and 22 and the outer surface portions 24 and 26 of these flanges 12 and 14, which are adjacent the edges 20 and 22, are arcuately shaped as best illustrated in Figure 2. Handle members 28 and 30 are secured to the frame member 10 by a screw 32. These handle members 28 and 30 each have attaching portions generally indicated at 34 and 36, respectively, and handle portions indicated by the reference characters 38 and 40, respectively.
These attaching portions 34 and 36, in the preferred embodiment illustrated, have inner surface portions 42 and 44 which engage and closely fit the opposite sides of the shower door frame member 10, including the arcu- 2,994,368 Patented Sept. 15, 1959 ately shaped outer surface portions 24 and 26. These attaching portions 34 and 36 are also provided at their inner edges with flanges or keys 46 and 48. These key portions 46 and 48 engage the edge portions 20 and 22 on the flanges 12 and 14 of the shower door member 10 and are held tightly against these edge portions by the screw 32 which extends through an aperture 50 formed in the inner handle member 23 and through the frame member Ill and into a threaded recess 52 provided in the outer handle member 30.
When the screw 32 is tightened in place, the handles 28 and 30 are held against the door frame and the flange or key portions 46 and 48 are held in engagement with the edge portions 20 and 22 of the frame. This engagement prevents rotation of the handle-s relative to the frame member, about the axis of the screw 32 and thereby prevents the loosening of the screw 32 which such relative rotation would tend to produce.
It will be noted that key portions 46 and 48 produce a local distortion of the flange of the sealing channel 18 in which they are partially embedded. This distortion is barely noticeable and is not offensive from an appearance point of view.
in the preferred embodiment illustrated, the locking shoulders 46 and 48 extend throughout the (full height of the shower door handle, as indicated by the bracket 54 in Figure 1.
While only one specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described in detail herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that numerous modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a shower door, the combination of a vertically extending shower door frame member of uniform horizontal cross-section, having an aperture therethrough, said frame member having a vertically extending inner edge and an arcuately shaped outer surface adjacent said edge, said aperture being disposed spaced outwardly from said vertically extending inner edge, a handle member having an attaching portion overlying said aperture and engaging and substantially fitting said arcuately shaped outer surface, said attaching portion including a shoulder engaging said edge at at least two spaced points, and a single screw extending through said aperture and threadedly engaging said attaching portion of said handle member.
2. In a shower door, the combination of a vertically disposed channel shaped frame member having a pair of spaced inner edge portions adapted to be disposed at opposite sides of a panel received therebetween, said frame member also having an aperture therethrough spaced outwardly from said inner edge portions, a pair of handle members disposed at opposite sides of said frame member, each of said handle members having an attaching portion overlying said aperture and engaging one side of said frame member and having a shoulder engaging one of said edge portions at two spaced points, and a screw extending through one of said handle members and through said aperture in said frame member and threadedly engaging the other of said handle members to hold said handle members in engagement with the opposite sides of said frame member and to hold each of said shoulders in engagement with said inner edges of said frame member at said spaced points.
