Description

FRAMELESS WINDOW SCREEN Filed May 24, 1945 INVENTOR I .ZIJIRua ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 13, 1946 FRAMELESS WINDOW SCREEN David Jordan Rust, San Leandro, Calif., assignor to By-Lock Company, Ltd., San Leandro, Calif, a corporation of California Application May 24, 1945, Serial No. 595,495
1 Claim.
This invention relates to the building art, and particularly to a frameless window screen of the type generally disclosed in my Patent No. 2,372,912, dated April 13, 1945, and in my copending application for patent, Serial No. 563,953, filed November 17, 1944, patented July 31, 1945, No. 2,380,794.
The particular object of the present invention is to provide a special screen structure which will be effective in mechanism of this type to assure that when the screen is placed against the blindstop of a window and placed under tension there will be no opportunity for any slight open spaces to occur between the edges of the screen and the blind-stop. While my improved structure will be especially effective with the type of mechanism disclosed in my patent and pending application for patent, it is to be understood that it is. not limited thereto but may be of general utility in connection with frameless window screens of various types.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive'window screen and yet one which will be exceedingly -effective for the purpose for which it is designed.
These objects are accomplished by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawing similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the frameless window screen mechanism as installed in place.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional View of the same.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary View of a detached portion of the screen cloth embodying my improved invention.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawing, the numeral I designates the screen cloth secured, as at 2 and 3, to the upper and lower portion of the window frame, preferably in the manner shown in my pending application for patent, as above indicated; the mechanism at 3 being used to place the window screen under tension in the manner described in said application, reference to which is made for greater clarity in that respect.
As the screen I is drawn under tension against the blind stop 4 of the window, it is generally drawn inwardly and sufficiently taut so as to completely seal the space between the screen and the blind-stop to prevent the entrance of insects or the like therethrough.
However, in some instances it is possible that a slight wave or crinkle may occur in the screen, and which will tend to develop some open space at the blind-stop. My present invention avoids this possibility.
In the preparation of my screen for use in connection with the associated parts I provide a slightly reinforced strip along the vertical edges thereof, as at 5, and I then permanently bend the edges of this portion 5 on a slight radius inwardly, as shown at 6 in Fig. 2.
When the screen is disposed over the window and placed under tension the inturned edges 6 come in direct contact with the blind-stop and the tensioning of the screen tends to press this edge into closer contact with the blind-stop, and also prevents lateral movement of the inturned edge along the blind-stop in order to compensate for any'slight waves or other irregularities which may be pulled into the screen while the same is being tensioned.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that there has been produced such a frameless window screen as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the frameless window screen, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, the following is claimed as new and useful, and upon which Letters Patent is desired:
A screen for a window frame or the like com prising a sheet of screening, means securing opposite ends of the sheet to opposite ends of the frame, the edges of the sheet between the ends being inturned at an angle to the plane of the sheet whereby to provide edges which abut against the frame between the ends thereof.
DAVID JORDAN RUST.
