ATTORNEYS.
N. PETERS. Fhnw-L'rlhngmpher. Washingnm DC UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN means, or HARLAN, IOWA.
SHUTTER-WORKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,588 dated July 21, 1885.
Application filed August 22, 1884.
To all whom; it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN DIERKs, of Harlan, in the county of Shelby and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Shutter- W'orker, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in shutter-workers; and it consists, principally, of a hinge with one leaf provided with an externally-toothed socket or eye, the teeth of said socket or eye being formed directly in the surface of the socket, combined with a spindle having a screw-thread or worm engaging said toothed socket or eye of, leaf, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a blind or shutter with the worker applied. Fig. 2is across section on the line of the spindle, and Fig. 3 shows the toothed hinge-leaf.
A represents the windowjamb or other fixed support, on which the shutter B is hung by hinges, the worker being applied to the lower hinge. The half portion or leaf a of thehinge that is fixed on the shutter has its eye portion 12 formed with teeth on its outside surface, so that it is practically a worm pinion. The
jalnb A is bored, and through it passes a spindle, d, whose outerend is supported by a flange, 6, formed on the leaf (1 of the hinge, and the end of the spindle is out with a thread that engages the teeth on the eye piece or pinion b. The spindle d is shouldered to take against the (Model) jamb, and its inner end is squared to receive a crank-handle, f, for use in turning the spindle, or in place of the handle an ornamental knob or wheel may be used.
It willbe seen that by this construction and arrangement the shutter or blind can be opened and closed by turning the handle and spindle, and the blind will be retained in any position more or less open.
This mechanism is durable, and can readily be applied to anyshutter, blind, gate, ordoor.
I am aware of the existence in this and an analogous class of inventions of a hinge-leaf provided with an extension having a pinion upon its upper corner edge which receives the pintle of the other leaf, and which is worked byascrewthreaded spindle; also, of aspirally grooved or notched sleeve connected to the casing or jamb by a casing, within which it is V disposed, and to the shutter by a bolt, and a cap fitted upon said sleeve and formed with an arm connected to the shutter.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a shutter-worker, the spindle having a Worm or screw thread upon one end, in combination with the hinge-leafwith its socket or eye provided with external teeth formed directly in the surface of said socket or eye,substant-iall y as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN DIERKS.
