SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,690, dated May 18, 1897.
Application filed October 28, 1896. Serial No. 610,379. (No modeh) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, DAVID A. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sycamore, in the county of Irwin and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Door or Gate Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in looks for doors, gates, and the like, and the object is to provide a simple, convenient, and durable lock for general use.
To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same figures of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of the front edge of a door, showing my improved lock in place. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the door and door-jamb. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the door and j amb through the center of the bolt. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line of the spindle. Fig. 5 is a front elevation with the cover of the locking-case removed. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the removable key, and Fig. 7 is a similar view of the key-escutcheon.
1 represents the door, and 2 the door jamb or frame.
3 represents a cylindrical case having an integral flange 4 and a square or rectangular orifice 5, terminating in a cylindrical chamber 6, in the inner end of which is secured a sleeve 7 by means of a set-screw 8.
9 represents the bolt, the projecting end 10 of which is circular in form and having a square or rectangular section 12, terminating in a collar 13. The body 14 of the bolt is cylindrical, and its inner end is formed with a vertical slot 15, in which is pivoted one end of a rod 16, the projecting free end of which is formed with an eye 17, through which a bolt or pin 18 passes to pivotally connect it between the outer ends of the radial arms 19 19 on the spindle 20.
21 represents a spiral spring encompassing the body portion 14 of the bolt, one end resting against the other and in contact with the shoulder 22 of the sleeve 7, the office of said sleeve being to force the end of the bolt 9 outwardly.
23 rep. esents the keeper, secured in the usual manner to the door-jamb'2. This keeper comprises a recessed socket 24, an integral flange 25, and inclined lip 26, upon which the bolt slides to enter the recess in the socket.
27 and 28 represent the knobs, secured to the spindle and by means of which the bolt 9 is operated. The knob 27 has a shank 29, which terminates in a collar 30, which is provided with a radial circular orifice 31, which receives the lower end of a vertical bolt 32, mounted in a case 33, secured to the inside of the door. This bolt 32 is formed with a rack 34, which meshes with a gear wheel or pinion 35 on a shaft 36, journaled in the case. The end 37 of this shaft is square and proj ects through the case and into the key-orifice 38 in the door. A collar 39 has a central square orifice 40, which engages the end 37 of the shaft, and it is secured thereon by a countersunk head-screw 41. The shank 42 of this collar is tapering in form, and the face of the collar contiguous to the shank is formed with an annular groove 43, in which are located two diametrically-opposed pin-holes 44,which engage the projecting integral pins 45 on the end of the key 46. This end of the key is formed with a central tapering recess corresponding to the shank 42, and the outside of the end of said key is formed with two oppositely-disposed longitudinal ribs 47 47 to correspond to the similar recesses 48 48 in the escutcheon 49.
50 represents a flat spring, one end of which is secured in the case 33, and its free end presses against the bolt 32 to hold it in position after it is operated.
The upper end of the bolt 32extends through the top of the case, and it is provided with a handle 51, by means of which it may be operated independently of the key.
52 represents a slide-lever fulcrumed on the outside of the top of the case 33, and one end is adapted to engage a recess or notch 53 in the bolt to prevent the bolt being operated by the key, when so desired.
The act of closing the door causes the bolt 9 to engage the socket in the keeper and hold the door closed, but by simply turning the knob on either side of the door the bolt 9 may be withdrawn to open the door. Vhen it is desired to lock the door from the inside, the handle 51 of the bolt 32 is pushed down, which causes its lower end to enter the orifice 31 in the collar 30 of the shank 29 of the knob 27, secured on the spindle 20. This prevents the spindle from turning, and consequently locks the bolt 9.
hen necessary to lock or unlock the door from the outside, the key is inserted so that its projecting pins 45 engage the pin-holes 4A in the collar 39 011 the shaft 36, the pinion 35 of which raises or lowers the vertical bolt 32 to release or engage the spindle 20, as desired.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A look comprising the casing 3, the bolt 9 mounted therein and provided with the connecting-rod 16, the spindle 20 provided with the radial arms 19, to which the rod 16 is connected, and provided with the knob 27, havin g shank 20, and collar 30 having radial orifice 31, in combination with the case 33, the vertical bolt 32 mounted therein and provided with a rack 34:, handle 51 and notch 53, the slide-lever 52 adapted to engage said notch, the shaft 30 having a pinion meshing with said rack, and having a square end 37, a collar 39 mounted on said square end, and provided with the pin -holes 44- and tapering shank 42, and the removable key 46, having a central tapering recess and projecting integral pins 45, substantially as shown and described.
