IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING ATTACHMENTS TO CAR-WINDOWS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,086, dated January 21, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE CORNWALL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and-Improved Spring Attachment to Oar-Windows, of which the following is a specification:

Figures 1 and 2 are side views of car-windows provided with myimproved spring attach ment, showing them in different positions. Fig. 3 is a face view of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to a spring attachment to the sashes of car-windows, and more particularly to such sashes that are let down into boxes of the car-frame when opened; and has forits object to prevent the rattling of said windows when openedorclosed and consequent annoyance to passengers. The invention consists in the application to each upper end of sash of one or more U-shaped inverted springs, whose ends are fastened to the faces of the sash, while their upper rounded parts project above the sash, andcome in contact with the frame of the window to prevent rattling either in closed or open positions of the sash, and to lowering the sashes, as described hereinafter. In the drawing, the letter A represents the sash of the car-window fitted into the frame B in such manner that it can be let down, as in Fig. 1, whenever the window is to be opened,

Fig. 1, and thereby prevent the sash from rattling in the box; and when the sash is raised,

- as in Fig. 2, the outer face or faces of the springs 0 bear against the lintel a or upper part of the window-frame, as shown in Fig. 2, andprevent rattling in equal degree.

The springs are of such form and so applied as to keep the sash out of contact with the casing on either side; and likewise to adapt them to serve as handles for raising and lowering the sash, thus rendering the provision of other or the ordinary hoisting-straps unnecessary.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The arrangement of the bow-spring G with the sashA and easing B, as shown and described, whereby it prevents rattling, and also serves the purpose of a handle, as specified.
