SASH-FASTENER.

Be it known that I, NILs J. LINDBEOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bishophill, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in sash-fasteners; and it consists in certain novel features of construction,combination, and ar rangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character, and thereby render them more durable and efficient in use and less expensive to manufacture.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation, with parts in section, of a window with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail rear View of the fastener for the lower sash.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 clenotes a window-frame; 2, its sill; 3, the lower sash, and 4 the upper sash. These sashes 3 and. 4 are mounted to slide vertically in the frame 1 in the usual manner.

The lower sash 3 is secured by a fastener 14, which is secured in a recessed portion of the lower part of the sash. 3. This fastener 14 comprises a cover-plate 15, provided at its upper end with a curved finger-piece 16, by means of which the sash 3 may be readily raised or lowered. Upon the rear face of said cover-plate 14 is secured a coiled or loop spring 17, which has secured to one of its ends a detent 18. Said detent has an outwardly-projecting lug 18, which is adapted to extend through an opening in the plate 14 and to engage a recess 19, formed in the innerface of the sill 2 of the window-frame, and thereby prevent upward movement of the sash 3. Said detent is adapted to be released or disengaged from said recess by a trip device 20 in the form of a bar, which is mounted to slide upon the 'inner face of said plate 14. The lower end of said bar 21 is formed with a wedgesliaped portion 22, which is adapted to engage the end of said spring which carries the detent and to move the latter inwardly away from its recess when said bar is depressed. The bar is held in an elevated position by the opposite end of the spring 17 and the upper end of said bar projects slightly above said finger-piece, so as to be readily depressed by the thumb when it is desired to release the detent.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a window-frame having a sill formed with a recess and a sash mounted to slide in said frame, of a fastener secured upon said sash and comprising a coverplate formed with a finger-piece, a spring socured upon the said plate, a locking-detent carried by said spring and adapted to engage the recess in said window-sill, and a sliding trip device adapted to release said detent from said recess, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a window-frame having a sill formed with a recess and a sash mounted to slide in said frame, of a fastener secured upon said sash and comprising a coverplate formed with a finger-piece, a coil or loop spring secured upon said cover-plate, a locking-detent carried by one end of said spring and adapted to engage said recess in said sill, a sliding trip-bar actuated by the other end of said spring and formed with a wedge-shaped portion adapted to engage the first-mentioned end of said spring and force said detent out of engagement with said recess, substantially as described.

3. A sash-fastener comprising a cover-plate adapted to be secured to the Window-sash and formed with a finger-piece, a spring secured to said cover-plate, a detent carried by said spring and adapted to engage a window-frame to lock said sash against movement, a springactuated trip-bar slidably mounted upon said cover-plate and formed with a Wedge-shaped portion adapted to engage said spring and force the said dete'nt out of engagement With IO the Window-frame, substantially as described.
