Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMEs SAWYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Golden City, in the county of Barton, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sash-holders; and it has for its object to provide a holder which will be cheap and simple of manufacture and in which the member carried by the sash will require no casing for its parts other than that formed by the sash itself.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a construction which will comprise but few parts and which may be easily and quickly put in place.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in both the views, Figure 1 is a section taken vertically through the lower sash of a window and its frame embodying the present invention, the upper sash being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the latch member and its plunger that is carried by the sash.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a window-frame 5 of usual construction, provided with the usual beads, between which are mounted upper and lower sashes 6 and 7, respectively. Against the inner face of one side of the frame 5 and between each pair of heads is secured a vertical rack-bar 8, the under sides of the teeth of which are beveled, as illustrated, so that a latch may be drawn upwardly over them, but will engage them when it is attempted to move the latch downwardly.
In the outer face of one side of each of the window-sashes is a recess 10, in which is disposed a longitudinal spring-metal plate 11, which is fixed to the sash at its up er end, while its lower end is free to move f fom the recess and covers the deepened lower end portion of the recess shown'at 12. In the deepened lower end portion 12 of the recess is seated a helical spring 13, which tends to force the lower end of the spring-metal plate beyond the face of the sash. At the lower end of the spring metal plate 11 are the spaced fingers 14, which are bent outwardly and then upwardly into tubular form around the transverse head 16 of a T-shaped plunger 17, the stem of which is passed through a perforation 18, leading from the deepened portion 12 of the recess through the side rail of the sash.
Each sash in all positions of its vertical adjustment holds the lower end of its springplate 11 in position to engage the corresponding rack-bar, the helical spring insuring engagement of the outwardly-turned portions of the fingers 14 with the rack-bar.
When a sash is raised, the spring latch-plate drags its lower end portion upwardly over the bevel-faces of the teeth of the corresponding rack-bar, and when the sash is released the weight of the sash carries the lower end of the spring latch-plate onto the upper face of the corresponding rack-bar tooth. Each of the plunger rods or stems extends through the side of the corresponding sash, so that when the sash is to be lowered the rod may be grasped and the latchplate drawn from engagement with the corresponding rack-bar and held in such position as the sash moves downwardly.
What is claimed is The combination with a window-frame provided with a rack-bar, of a sash slidably mounted in the frame, a spring latch-plate seated in the frame and attached thereto at its upper end, said plate having fingers at its lower end, a plunger passed slidably through the sash and having a transverse head about which the fingers of the plate are bent in an outward direction in position to enga e the rack-bar, said spring-plate being movable to withdraw its fingers from the rack-bar, and a supplemental sprin seated in the sash against one face of t e lower end portion of the latch-plate.
