SASH FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, EDWIN A. HILLS, a citizen of the United States,-and a resident of lVethersfield, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Sash Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription, whereby any one skilled in the art can make and use the same.

Myinvention relates to the class of devices used for holding a window in any desired position and also for locking the same; and the object of my invention is to provide a device of this class that shall be automatic in action, simplein construction and operation, and one so constructed as to be readily attachable to windows now in use.

To this end my invention consists in the device as a whole, in the combination of parts, and in the details and their combination, as hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a front view of a window frame and sash with parts broken away to show construction. Fig. 2 is a detail view in vertical cross-section through the frame, showing one jamb with the holder in place. Fig. 3 is a detail edge view of the lower sash, showing the catch in engagement with the holder, on enlarged scale. Fig. 4 is a detail top View of the part shown in Fig. 3 with the holder removed.

In the accompanying drawings the letter 0 denotes a window-frame constructed in the usual and ordinary manner and provided with slideways a, in which the sashes I) travel in their sliding movement. A holder 0 is located in the slideway a" and consists, preferably, of a strip of metal having in one edge holding-notches c and a locking-notch 0 This holder is secured in place in any desired manner, the locking-notches being preferably located at the upper end of the holder and the lower part being left uniform as to shape. The sash b is recessed lengthwise along its edge, as at Z), the holder 0 being located in this recess.

A latch'oasing e is secured to the edge of the sash, preferably at its upper end, and a latch f is pivoted in this casing, one end of the latch being provided with a lock f and the opposite end with a handle f This latch is pivoted at a point preferably between the ends and is so shaped that the handle extends over the top of the casing to a position in front thereof, the shape and weight of the handle being such as to cause the lock f to lie continually in engagement with the holder 0. The lower parts of the holding-notches 0' form a shoulder, the upper wall of a notch being beveled to the outer edge of the holder, so that as the sash is lifted the latch will automatically free itself from the notch, but will prevent any downward movement of the sash by reason of the latch engaging the shoulder at the lower part of the notch. The locking-notch c is formed with a shoulder at its upper and lower walls, so that as the latch engages this notch the sash is locked-from movement in either direction.

The upper and lower sashes may each be provided with my improved lock, in which case the holder for each sash will preferably be located in opposite jambs of the windowcasing and near the top of the sash, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

I claim as my invention- In a window-catch, in combination with the frame having a slideway and a sash adapted to move longitudinally therein, a holder including a metallic case having a lengthwise groove and secured to the edge of the sash, a rod secured to the frame aiid located within the groove in the metallic case and having notches opening toward the front of the sash and an angular-shaped latch pivoted on the metallic case within the groove in the sash with oneend adapted to engage the notches in the rod and the opposite end projecting out of said groove to the front of the sash.
