Description
W eeaeeww J. A. SHANNER, OF PLAINVIEW, ILLINOIS.
v Letters Patent No. 84,007, dated November 10, 1868.
IIMPROVED MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. A. SHANNER, of Plainview, in the county of Macoupin, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in theart to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation with a part of the casing removed Figure 2 represents a vertical sectional elevation and Figure 3 represents a detached view showing the valve.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention relates to improvements in devices for operating pumps. l
It consists in providing a toothed rack upon the pumprod, and a pair of gear-wheels for operating it, one of which is turned by a hand-crank,'gea1in g into the other, and provided with a toothed segment, which gea-rs into the rack-teeth during a part of its revolution, and actuates itin one direction, and the other with a Acorresponding segment arranged to gear into the rack for a similar portion of time, to actuate the stem in the'other direction, the said, segments being so set on their respective wheels as to act alternately.
In the drawings, Arepresents the case for containing the operating-mechanism, and B, the tube.
C represents the lower end of the rod, which is bifnreated, as shown in iig. 3.
D represents the valve, which is pivoted between the bifurcated parts, and composed of two leaves, as shown in tig. 2, and each leat` is composed ot' a metal and a leather plate, 'the metal being designated by a, and the leather by b. The plates. a are riveted to the leatherI plates, for the purpose of stifieningr the same.
Springs el are secured near the axis of the val-ve, and arranged so that the upper ends bear upon the leaves in a manner to canse them to close readily with the sides of the tube at the moment of commencing the upward movement. p
E represents a toothed rack, secured to the upper end of the pump-rod, proyided with two rows of teeth.
F represents a driving-wheel, provided with a crankshalt, and arranged to gear into the wheel G, arranged in the same vertical plane.
The wheel F is provided on its opposite side with a toothed segment H, and the wheel G with a corresponding toothed segment on its front side. These segments are so arranged, with reference to each other and the rack, as to be brought into gear with it alternately, and as they rotate in opposite directions, the rod is thereby actuated reciprocally.
It may not be necessary to construct the rack in two parts, if the segments be made of larger diameter than the wheels.
The means ofactuating the pump-rod presents the advantage of requiring but little space, as the requisite amount of movement for the same may be obtained with wheels of quite small diameter. I
The application of rotary motion by the hand is also preferable to reciprocating ni'otion.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the wheels F and G, of the segments Il and I, and the rack E, arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
J. A. SHANNER.
Vitnesses:
YV. J. EAsLEY, SAMUEL BROWN.
