TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known thatL'EDWIN LOWE,lof Bur-rows, in the county of Carroll, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Looms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enableothers skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had -to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

The object of my improvement is to provide means for operatingr the treadlesand shuttles from the lay.

It consists in connecting-to the lay, pawls suitably arranged to give intermittent rotary motion to a tappetshaft, lwhich in turn operates the treadles and picker-stalk, as will be more fully described on` reference to the* accompanying drawings, wherein- 1 Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a loom provided with my improvements, and' Figure 2 represents a vertical longitudinal section on the line :v :r of fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A represents the lay, and B the tappet-shaft; C and C connecting-rods for actuating tli`e pawls a and a', for rotating the shaft B. At each backward movement the pawl a communicates aquarter of a revolution, and

at each forward movement of' the'same the pawl a actuates the shaft B a quarter of a revolution. At each quarter revolution, one of the treadles D is actuated by tappets on the shaft B.

Another tappet-sha'tr-E, is provided, which receives motion from the wheeltF on the tappet-shaft B, and is provided with the tappets AGr for actuating the levers H, pivoted at h to the loom-frame, and provided at the opposite ends with`belts z' wrkingover pulley k, and actuating thevpicker-stali's. The staffs may be thrown back by a spring or any other suitable means. u i
