dlp Scintille ttfetnh tu im time lrttas lzittnt zum mating putt at ttc same TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, H. O. NAUEN, of New York, 122 Forsyth street, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Viste-Clamp; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing-- Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of this invention.
Y Figure 2 is a front`view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of two hinged spring-jaws, provided on their outer surfaces or backs with lips, and on their inner surfaces with a lining of-lead, leather, India rubber, or other soft material, in such a manner that a vise-clamp is obtained, which, by means of the lips Von the backs of its jaws, is firmly supported in a vise, and which allows of clamping articles of any description with ease and facility.
A A represent two jaws, made of cast iron, or any other suitable material, and provided each with one or two arms or Shanks, a, through the ends of which is passed a pivot, b, so that the two jaws are hinged together, as shown in g. 1. In practice, each jaw may be provided with one shank only, so that one side of the clamp is entirely open for clamping long articles. The arms or shanks a are subjected to ,the action of a spring, c, which has a tendency to throw the jaws open, andI have arranged this spring so that it straddlcs thc shanks a, and does not interfere `with the articles to be held by the clamp. The backs of the jaws A are provided with lips, d, which, when the clamp is placed between thcjaws of a vise, bear on the upper surface thereof, and sustain the clamp firmly in position. The inner or working surfaces of said jaws are provided with a lining, c, of lead, leather, India rubber, brass, copper, or other suitable soft material, lead or copper being preferable for metal-workers, 'and leather or India rubber for workers in weed, ivory,Y or other similar materials. Said lining is either secured in the jaws by dove-tails and screws combined, as shown in thc drawing, and it is so arranged it can readily be removed when it is worn out, and replaced bya new one, or that linings of diTercnt nature can be applied to the same jaws. A
By these means a vise-clamp is obtained which is cheap and durable, and much more convenient than vise` clamps of the ordinary construction. Being provided with a spring, it opens spontaneously, and the workman is enabled to fasten his work with case and convenience. The Shanks a project below the spindle of the vise, and, where two pairs of such shanks are used, they straddle the spindle, and consequently they do not interfere with articles of suc'h a width that they reach from the spindle o'f the vise up to the edges of the jaws, and if th'c clamp is made open on one side, it is capable of taking articles of any length, such as can bc clamped in the vise without thc clamp.
What I claim as new, and desire to sccureby Letters Patent, ls-
A vise-clamp, composed of two jaws, A, hinged together by means of shanks a, and a pivot or pivots, b, and provided with lips, d, on their backs, a removable lining, e, on their working faces, and a spring, e, which opens the jaws, substantiallyas herein setforth.
