To all whom tt lmix/y concern Be it known that I, W1LLIAM H. SIBLn, of Harrs-V burg, in the county of Dauphin, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Devices for Holding Bits and other tools, or like purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the lettersand figures of reference` marked thereon.

Figure 3 is an end View of the' stock, or handle, showing the position and form of the vgripe E.

My invention relates to handles for holding bits and other tools; and n It consists in thecombination of a coiled spring, ad. justed in the handleA itself, with a hinged clamp, so

` arranged that the clamp shall be pressed against the i withinstoek.` A, as shown in iig. 2 of the drawings.

Letter I represents a slot in gripe E, for the recep tion of the shank O.

Letter i represents a finger, a projection of gripe E.

My device is operated as follows:

When the operator desires to insert the shank C of any tool into the tool-holder, he grasps the stock A with his left hand, and with'the thumb ofAthe same hand presses upon finger i. until the gripe E is forced to a horizontal position Within the upper rim of the stock, which operation causes the under surface of the gripe to press upon the metal coil-spring e, forcing it downward. He then, withhis right hand, inserts the shank of the tool he' desires to use into slot I, and then removes his thumb from iinger'i, which operation relieves the spring e, and allows it to press upward Yagainst the gripe, thereby clamping the shank of the tool with suiicient power to hold it securely.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
