IMPROVEMENT IN HAMMER AND MALLET.

4TO ALL lWHO-M ITVMAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. McNEimoi Springfield, Hampden county, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and' useful Improved Tinners Hammer; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a side view of my hammer,
FigureZ a section view of a part, and
Figures 3 and 4 detail views of the parts.
This invention-consists in arranging a combination of hammer and mallet for tinners use, so that the mallet maybe removed, when not used, and readily replaced when desired.
In construction, I form my device of a cylindrical piece, A, into which the handle, K, is placed, having e. hammer-head, O, on one side, and a socket, a, upon the other. Into this socket the mallet, B, fits, it being formed with a tenon, b, and shoulder, so as to make a rm and neat joint. Y
This mallet may be fastened in with a screw, or other convenient means, if necessary. f
Upon the face of the hammer-head C, in front, is formed a pene, c, for various purposes required in tin-work.
This hammer is peculiarly useful in the roofing of houses, where it is inconvenient to carry two separate tools, such being necessary in the operations.
In Figure 5 is shown a diagram of another method of arranging these parts.
In this, thehandle K isset into a wooden mallet-head, L, the hammer-head, m, of metal, being screwed into the head L, as shown by the dotted line. This is for the purpose of rendering the combination-tool lighter than is obtained by the former` method. Y
By arranging the pene e upon the hammer-head C, instead of the opposite end, now occupied by the mallet, I am able -to use the pene-without turning the hammer, as isA necessary with hammers as commonly` arranged. f
New, having described my' invention, what I claimras new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hammer and mollet combined, in which the mallet B fits in a. socket, a, constructed in the piece A, having the head C with pene c, the parts being combined and arranged substantially as herein shown. i
2. The arrangement of the pene c upon the head, C, ot' the hammer, substantially as shown` WM. S. MeNEIL.
