Description

tiuiied (5mm T. s. ooFFrN, or HARRiNGToN, MAINE.
Leners Patent No. 83,463, dated october 27, 186s. l
1 IMPROVED HAmlfEn To Yall 'whom lit may concern Be it known that I, '1L-S. GOFFIN, of Harrington, in the .county of Washington, and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hammer; Hatchets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the .saine,:. 1'eerence heilig had to the accompanying drawings,-forming part of this specification, in which- Figi-ire 1 is a side view of my invention, with certain parts' shown broken away to exhibit the construetion.
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view of the hammer and hatchet-blade.
Similar letters vof' reference indicate like parts. The object of this invention is to provide a simple and convenient tool. It consists in removably attaching the hatchet to the hammer-head, by means of a screw, formed upon the end of the hatchet, and in the employment of a spring-catch to lock the hatchet in. any desired position upon the-hammer-head.
In the drawings, A is thel hammer-part, having short curved claws B, and a socket-extension, O C, betweenthe two parts of which latter the handle G lits, and is secured by screws or'other suitable device. D is the hatchet-blade, formed with a screw, E, which lits in the upper face of the'hannner, as shown. [n order to prevent the hatchet from turning, a spring-catch is provided, and located within a recess formed in the metal-of the hammer, as shown. The
spring d of this .catch-device bears a projection, a,
which its in a short slot or recess formed in the the claws a better hold on a nail-head, the thumb-bit b is pressed down, thus withdrawing the projection a from its recess in the hatchet, and leaving the latter free to be turned.
By this invention, short claws, arranged near the line of the handle, may be employed, and a greater leverage gained thereby than is possible with the clawhatchets heretofore used:
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-'- vThe hatchet D, adapted to be removably attached tothe hammer-head A, having the short claws B, Aby means of the screw E, and heldin any desired'position by the spring-catch a b d, as herein described,
for the purpose specified.
T. S. COFFIN.
