PETER BROADBOOKS, OF BATAVIA, NEW YORK. Letters Patent No. 65,638, dated June 11,1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN' WIRE-CUTTING PIN GERS.
Lige elgehule referme tain Atlgete @Letters ntent met mating part ef tte sume.
(T0/ALL "WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, PETER BROADBOOKS, of Batavia, in the county of Genesee, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in- Nippers or Wire- Cutting Pincers; and 'I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved uippers.
Figure 2 is a detached view of the collar to fasten the nppers together.
Figure 3 is a detached viewof the parts composing the nippers.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in an improved construction of cutting pincers, pliers, or I1ippers,-especially adaptedk to cutting wire, but equally applicable to all similar uses wherein metal or hard and tough substances require great power to sever them easily. This improvement consists in-an entirely new construction and arrangement of the parts which form a pair of pincers, three pieces being employed instead of two, as usual, and are secured and .jointed together by means of a collar-aroundV the head or jaws of the pincers, instead of being riveted in theordinary manner.
The object of this device is to obtain great leverage power in the cutting jaws, and the reacting movement of a spring to open the jaws.
A rectangular metal collar, a, is fitted around the heads c c of the two outside metal handles or legs b b', and between the legs b b splaced a steel spring, d, the head c1 of which is also enclosed in the collar a. Upon .the heads of the leg b and the spring d are` welded, or fastened with rivets or screws, steel jaws or cutting plates e e. The head of the spring 0l is fitted to Work in the head of the leg b by Va knuckle-joint, of which g is the knuckle on the'spring, and 7L the socket in which it tits onthe. leg b. The other end of the spring d bears against .the inside of the leg b, and teds to open the jaws e e. A cam may be employed in place of the knuckle. It will be seen that bythis connection of the legs and spring with each other by means of the collar a., the leg b acts as a powerful lever upon the spring c, which, with its short arm or head, draws the cutting jaws e e together upon wife or other substanceto be cut between them, while the spring c will throw the jaws open the instantthepressure of the hand on the legs is removed.
Having described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-4 The legs b b/and spring d, secured together by means of the rectangular collar a, fitting over and working upon the heads c e'of the legs b b and spring d, the latter connected to the leg b by means of the knuckle- Vjoint, composed of the knuckle g and socket h, all constructed and arranged substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
