ELI S. BITNER, OF LOCK'HAV-EN, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent N o. 86,724, dated Februa/ry 9, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCREW-DRIVER HANDLES.
The Schedule referred to in {heseJaetters Patent and making part-of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern Beit known that I. ELI S. BITNER, of Lock Haven, in the county of Clinton, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw-Driver Handles and handles for other tools; andV improvement attached.
Figure 2 is a plan view ofthe cap and socket.
Figure 3 is a top view ofthe cap.
-In screw-driver handles, as commonly constructed, Where many screws are to be driven, the palnfof the hand becomes very sore, from the constantfriction occasioned by the tunning of the handle. To relieve this is the object of my invention; and
It consists in loosely setting in a socket a smooth metallic cap, formed to fit the palm of the hand, and then tightly fitting this socket in a hole bored in the top of the handle. Thus, While the handle, being pressed by the palm of the hand, is turned, the cap remains stationary.
My invention is so simple in its construction, that any one can easily fit it to any screw-driver now in common use, While at the same time the cost of construction will be so small as to place it Within the reach of almost any mechanic.
.My invention can also be applied to gimlets, and all other tools of like construction.
To enable others skilled in the art .to make and use my invention, I will new proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Als the screw driver handle, which has a hole bored in its top.
B is the cap, which may be made of any kind of metal, and is so rounded as to t the palm of the hand when it is partly closed.
b is the shank ofv the cap, which tits loosely in the socket C.
C is the socket, which fits tightly in the hole bored in the top ofthe screw-driver handle.
If it is not desirable to use the cap, it can be easily remo ved, and a piece of wood or metal, suitably formed, inserted in the hole in its stead.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The cap B, shank b, and socket, or ferrule, C, when the same are inserted in a suitable opening in' the top of a' screw-driver handle, the Whole being arranged substantially as described, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.l
