Description
@uiten tette @anni @fitte JGHN MULCHAHEY, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR" HIMSELF AND CHARLES MULGHAHEY.
Letters Patent No. 64,556, dated Moy 7, 1867.
,IMPROVED BELT-PUNCH.
TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY`CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN MULCHAHEY, of Springfield, Hampden county, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improved Belt-Punch; and' Ido hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. In the drawings- Figure 1 and Figure 2 each represent a side view of my invention. My invention consists of a convenient combination of' tools used'in belting work, and comprises the punch, Worked in the ordinary way between a pair ofjaws having handles, and attached and Working on a centre rivet, a pair of plyers for pulling the lacing through the belt, a knife for cuttingand trimming the same, an awl, and' a small fixed hodkin for pushing the lace through the :ml-holes. i v In construction I form my device of a pair of jaws, A and B, having handles or levers, C and D, attached and working ou the pivot E. The punch F is attached to the jaw A, its cutting edge closingl against the other jaw as in ordinary punches. On one side of the instrument I place, fastened to or forming part of each of the jaws respectively, a projection, I-I and H', which meet when the jaws are closed, forming a pair of plyers for pulling the thread or lace through the punch and awl-holes. On one of the jaws I rivet the knife-blade K, which may be opened, as shown in fig. 2, or closed along the side ofthe jaw, as shown in fig. 1. This blade is held in place by the spring L in either position, which is fastened at one end, a, upon the jaw II, pressing at the other upon the blade K. A rivet, pin, screw, or other suitable device may he used for the blade to work upon. In the end of one of thejawsB is a. socket, c, into which the aivl M tits when it is desired to use it; this is shown in iig. 2, There is a similar socket in the projection N, into which the awl M is placed when at rest; this position is shown in iig. I. On the outside of one of the handles C I fasten athin strip, O, of some suitable `metal, which forrns a spring-hook by which the whole instrument may be suspended or secured when a momentary disusc takes place. On the outside surface of one of the jaws B I place a small fixed bodkin, S, or punch, for -the purpose of pushing the lace or thread through the holes made by the awl or punch. There is a small set-screw, llt-hrough the side of the jaw into the socket c, for the purpose of securing the awl M when the instrument is fitted in.
The advantages of this device are that I form an instrument comprising all the tools used in mending and fastening belts for machinery, they being in a compact form, and conveniently arranged, thereby saving the trouble and inconvenience of carrying a number of separate tools up into the awkward positions that the workman is frequently compelled to take in mending and arranging halting upon machines, and his whole hit being in his hands, he does not have to lay down one tool and take up another to perform the different operations neccesary, besides being far more conveniently taken care of and stowed away than would be the case with. a number of separate instruments.
New, having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The arrangement of the awl M, projections H H', knife K, spring-bool; 0,'and hodkin S, upon and in connection with a belt-punch, substantially as set forth. I 1
