H. J. EDLUND.
SAW. No. 544,162. Patented Aug. 6, 1895.
J t W 2 WITNESSES:
INVENTOH A TTOHNE Y8.
UNITED STATES PKTENT OFFICE.
HENRY J. EDLUND, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,162, dated August 6, 1 895.
Applicationfiled April 9,1895.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY J. EDLUND, a. subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, at present residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kingsand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saws, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,
The object of the invention is to provide certain new and usefulimprovements in handsaws, whereby the saw-blade can-be readily gaged to permit the operator to cut to a desired depth.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
, Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of theimprovement. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same with the back in place as a gage, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The saw is provided with the usual blade A and a handle B, and the back 0 for the saw is made detachable from the blade A, so as to form a gage on the saw-blade, as indicated in Fig. 2. The back 0 is made U-shaped to fit both sides of the blade, with the middle portion formed with a projection 0, adapted to engage a notch A on the outer end of the saw-blade to securely hold the back in position when used as a back.
The free ends of the back 0 extend through recesses in the handle B, as indicated in Fig. 1, and the extreme ends are adapted to be fastened in place by a clamping-bolt D, passin g through the handle B, as indicated in Fig. 1,the said bolt being also adapted to connect the two ends of the back with each other at the time the back is used as a gage, as indicated in Fig. 2. 7
It will be seen that when the back G is in an ordinary position, as-shown in Fig. 1, the saw-blade A is strengthened and is used in the usual manner like an ordinary hand-saw; but when it is desired to make a series of cuts to a certain depth, then the back 0 is removed from its ordinary position by first unscrewing the bolt D and then pulling the back C out of the handleB and clamping the back 0 upon Serial Nor 545,073. (No model.)
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A saw having its handle secured directly to the blade and recessed on each side of the blade, and provided with a back, comprising two parallel members connected at one end and spaced apart a distance equal to the thick ness of the saw blade, said back fitting upon the saw blade with its closed end resting against the end of the blade and the free ends of its members projecting into the recess of the handle and secured thereto, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a saw having its handle secured directly to the blade and formed with a longitudinal recess on each side of the blade, of a back comprising two parallel members connected at one end and spaced apart a distance equal to the thickness of the blade, said back having its closed end resting against the end of the blade and the free ends of its members extending into the recesses of the handle, and a screw or bolt passing through the handle and the ends of the members of the back, substantially as described.
3. A saw, provided with a blade formed with a notch in one end, a handle formed with recesses, and a U-shaped back separate from the handle and engaging the said blade and handle, substantially as shown and described.
4.. A saw, provided with a blade formed with a notch in its end, a handle formed with recesses, a U-shaped back separate from the handle and engaging the said blade and handle, and a screw for engaging the projecting ends of the said .back, to secure the latter in place, substantially as shown and described.
. HENRY J. EDLUND.
