Description

TATE S ALEXIS FRIDERICK, OF OFALLON, ILLlNOlS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,062, dated May 11,1875; application filed March 27,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXIS FRIDERIGK, of OFallon, St. Clair county, Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Harness-Knife, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to edge splitting and beveling knives for beveling both edges of a strap; and it consists of a straight blade fastened obliquely to the guide-roller for splitting one edge at a time, so that straps of different widths may be split, and provided with two cutting-edges, contrived so that when one end of the blade is dull the other may be used by shifting the blade upside down.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my iniproved edge-splitter, together with a strap which illustrates the operation. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line w at, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line y y, and Fig. 4 is an edge view of the cutting-blade.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the blade, having the ends B crooked, so as to be fastened on the horizontal springs G by the vertical bolts D to hold it oblique to the guide-roller E for'splitting and beveling one edge of a strap, as indicated in Fig. 1; but it may be fastened in anyother approved way. In order to utilize the whole length of the cutting-edge it is divided into two parts, F and G, so adjusted that one part will be in working position when one side of the blade is up, and the other one when the other side is up, so that, by shifting the blade from time to time, the whole of the cutting'edge may be utilized. H is the spring-presser for regulating the work by pressing on the strip I, which is split off. It is fastened down and held with more or less force by one of the clampingbolts by which the blade is fastened.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The blade A, having the two edges F G, arranged as described, in combination with the guide-roller E and fastenings which hold it obliquely thereto, and either side up, substantially as specified.
ALEXIS FRIDERIOK. Witnesses:
