ANIMAL-SH EARS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Nor 284,968, dated September 11, 1883.

Application filed July 12, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WVILLIAM M. LINDSEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Antrim, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal- Shears; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying draw-' ings, which form a part of this specification, and in which I Figure l is a side view of my improved animal-shears, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the lower part of the same.

My invention has relation to that class of animalshears having a third blade adjustably and removably fastened between the two outer blades; and it has for its object, first, to obviate the trouble caused by the hair or wool of the animal to be sheared slipping through the lower ends of the cutting-edges and by the blades slipping out of their position and, secondly, to provide a convenient and strong fastening for the third blade, by which it may be adj ustably and removably secured between the outer blades; and it consists to that end in the improved construction and combination of parts of the blades and the fastening for the central blade of such shears, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A indicate the outer blades, having shanks B B and spring -bow C, of the construction usual in animal-shears. The parts of the lower ends of these blades near the shanks form flanges projecting out to the sides, facing each other when the shears are closed, and the central blade, F, which is provided with a shank, E, having a transverse perforation at its lower end, and which has both edges sharpened, is provided with two laterallyprojecting ears, G. at its lower end, which bear upon the sides of the outer blades, facing each other, sliding upon the flanges at their lower ends, and are bent slightly outward at their outer ends. It will be seen that these guiding-ears will prevent the hair or wool from slipping through below the cutting-edges of the blades, which is often a great sourceof annoyance in using shears of this class, and that the guides and (No model.)

the flanges will prevent the blades from slipping over upon the wrong slde of each other, which likewise is a great inconvenience. The

lower transversely-perforated end of the shank of the central blade slides upon a cross-rod, H, having screw-threads running in opposite directions upon both ends, which ends pass through perforations in the sides of the spring bow, and are held in position by two nuts, K, turning and fitting upon the cross-rod inside the bow, bearing against the inner sides of the same. 'Iwo spiral springs, J, bear against the inner sides of these nuts, and against two washers, I, which bear against the sides of the perforated end of the central shank, keeping it in position and allowing it to yield slightly during use, and by turning both nuts upon the cross-rod the pressure of the springs may be adjusted to bear evenly on both sides of theperforated shank. In this manner a simple adjustment is obtained, which is not,liable to get out of order or break, and by screwing the nuts toward each other the cross-rod may be withdrawn, and the blade with it, either for the purpose of using the shears as a common pair of shears or for the purpose of sharpen ing or repairing the blade.

I am aware, as stated in the statement of my invention, that shears have been made with a detachable third blade, and I do not wish to claim such construction, broadly; but

\Vhat I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

The combination of a pair of shear-blades having the usual shanks and spring-bow, a

central double-edged blade having the lower end of its shank perforated and a rod passing through perforations in the sides of the springbow and through the perforated lower end of the central shank, having its ends screwthreaded in opposite directions, and nuts turning upon the said ends, bearing against the sides of the spring-bow, and having spiral springs bearing against the nuts, and two washers, one upon each side of the central shank, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
