IDRAWCUT SCISSORS.
Application filed September 30, 1924. Serial No.' 740,853.
lll-special joint construction which will impart a relative longitudinal motion to the blades' during the cut-ting action whereby a draw cut is effected with a resulting increased efficiency in such devices.
In the drawings hereto Figure 1 shows a pair of scissors with blades half opened and with the pivot nut'and washer removed to reveal the peculiar construction v of the pivot which produces the draw cut action.
Figure 2 isa section of the joint taken along the` line 2-2 of Figure 1. V
Figure 3 is the' joint as shown in Figure 1, but with the blades closed and with the near blade drawn to the end of'its Slot which permits of the draw cut action.
Figure 4 shows a modified joint providing for agreater sliding or draw cut ac-l tion than the construction shown in Figure 1. l 0 u Figures ."5y and 6 show the same joint as do the other figures but with a sliding block over the pin to prevent wear.
',In the figures 1 is the upper blade, 2 the lower blade, and 3 and 4` are the respective handles of the blades.
At 5 is a pivotfpin for' holding the bladcs together and 'permitting' their pivotal action. i
This pin has an enlarged portion 6 and two reduced ends, the outer 'one being threaded as shown inFigure 2 and the other one being passed through blade-2 andv firmly rivertcd thereto by heading over as shown at At 8 is a notch formed in the edge of the rivet hole so that the spreading of the rivet will lock therein as indicated so lthat the riveted pinwill be securely locked against turning,
The position of this gear tooth in relation to the blade to which the pin is riveted is predetermined and is suclr that when the scissors blades are about halfopen, as shown in Figure 1, the tooth will project at right angles to the run of the slot in blade 1, and when the blades are closed will be in the position shown in Figure 3 drawing the blade to the end of the slot.
By this arrangement it is manifest that upon opening and closing of the scissors, blade 1 will be moved longitudinally back and forth relative to blade 2, thus effecting a draw cut action.
The amount of the draw cut motion is governed by the distance of the tooth 1l outwardly from the center of the pin, and if this is made relatively great several small teeth may be used in'place of the single tooth as indicated in Figure 4 of the drawings, where the tooth 11 of Figure 1 is replaced by a small gear segment having several small teeth 11 thereon and meshing with similar teeth 10 formed on the side of the s ot.
In contemplating the pivotal joint as described it will be seen that the pin 5 is liable to wear en account of its rubbing along the edge of the-slot in blade 1 and to overcome this I optionally reduce the height of the shoulder portion 6 of the pin and drop over the pin a plate 14 free to revolve on the pin and free to slide in the slot so that a long surface is presented to both edges of the slot, wear is'thus prevented and no backlash is developed through long use.
It is evident without illustration that a roller may be used in place of the sliding plate but the plate is simple and has longer life. f
Having thus described my invention, it will be seen to effect the desired objective in a very simple manner having the outward appearance of an ordinary scissors, for when in use a washer 12 covers the slot and a nut 13 provides' for adjustment of the blades to a proper working friction.
I claim:
1. A pair of scissors or shears comprising two blades pivotally and slidably secured together, the pivotal connection comprising a. shouldered pin secured fixedlv to one of the blades with the shoulder projecting into a slot in the other blade, a projection from the .shouldered portion of the pin engaging a notch in the edge of the slot, a threaded reduced portion of the pin extending through the slotted blade and having a nut thereon for securing the joint, and a plate through which said pin passes, said plate being free to rotate on thepin and to slide in the slot.
2. A pair of scissors or shears comprising two blades pivotally and slidably secured together, the pivotal connection comprising a shouldered pin secured lixedly to one of the blades with Ythe shoulder projecting into a slot in the other blade, a projection from the shouldered portion of the pinI engaging a notch in the edge of the slot, a threaded re duced portion of the pin extending through the slotted blade and having a nut thereon for securing the joint, and a plate through which said pin passes, said plate being free to rotate on the pin and to slide in the slot, the head end of said pin being riveted and extended into a notch in one of the blades to prevent it from rotating.
