Ritented lfiee. it', NME-l To uit' whom t may concern:
Be it lmown that ll, CHARLES C. lilloon- WORTH, e citizen of the lUnited States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Seem-Rippers, of which the .following is a Specification.
My invention relates to safety seamiip pers and its object is to provide a device of this character for cutting; or rippingn a seam or stitch without liability of injury to thc user or to the fabric operated upon.
' l shall describe my invention by reference to the drawings which accompany and form a part oi' this specification und illustrate one embodiment of my invention.
ln the draivinge, Figure l is :i front elcvaticn of my improved seam ripper. Fig. 2 is a front elevation with certain parte shown in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view end Fig.- l is a section teken on the .line Li-i of Fig. i..
Dressdnakers and tailors have found thet discarded safetyrazor biades make efiicient sea1n-rippers, but experience has shown that euch a blade cannot conveniently be han` died on account of .liability of injury to the operator. I therefore provide a handle or holder for a thin highlvsharpened cutting edge, such as a safety/water blade, and in the particular drawings selected for illustrating my invention, l represents a holder having a head 2 which ie provided with alongitudinally-extending slot for receiving the blade li. lt has been found advantageous in practice to have the bladev adjustable with respect to the head, and, in the present instance as shwn, tile blade is provided with. a longitudinal siot 6 through which the thumb-screw '7, the end of Which isV u rotary motion to the cutter to facilite@ the rippingr operation. 'lhiu coneiructimi of the handle also permits the work always to he in sight and preserves the cutting: edge from injury in case of accidental tall. The shape of the handle results in, giving 'the de \ire a more perfect balanre.
lt will be understood that various inodiii cations muy be made in the particular de-Y xire described and shown in the drawings without departing' from the Spirit of my in vention,
l claim:
A safety scam-ripper comprising' a, holder having a heed provided with e loiipgitudinallyextending opeirended Slot, a blade provided with a longitudinal slot, a screw for securing said blade in the slot oi" seid head, said screw passing through the slot in the blade, and a handle for said head, said handle being curved downwardly toward the blade-side of said heed and constituting a longitudinal extension thereof.
In testimony whereof, l have hereunto subscribed my name this` 8th day ci: dan. 1913.
