1 Claim. (Cl. 30320) This invention refers to scalpels, knives, or cutting instruments, and the main object is the provision of a prac tical, useful and inexpensive cutting device comprising a common type of shaver blade containing a longitudinal slot, and a holder therefor. The instant instrument is obviously applicable to a very wide range of uses.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a holder and such a blade together 'with means for releasably and adjustably locking the blade in desired position to the holder.
The above broad as well as additional objects will be clarified in the following description wherein characters of reference refer to like-numbered parts in the accompanying drawing. It is to be noted that the drawing is intended solely for the purpose of illustration and that it is therefore neither desired nor intended to limit the invention necessarily to any or all of the exact details of construction shown or described except insofar as they may be deemed essential to the invention.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Fig. l is a perspective view of the cutting instrument of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, with parts broken away and partly in section, illustrating an application of the instrument as a cutter.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a side view of the instrumenflshowing the side opposite to that show in Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral indicates an elongated rectangular blade having the cutting edge 11 and characterized by its relatively larger length than depth. Further, the blade 10 is provided with a 1ongitudinal slot 12 intermediate its length and depth.
The holder shown at 13 may of course be of any desired cross-sectional conformation other than the circular form shown. A nose 14 is cut out of one end of the holder by cutting back from the end of the holder along a line 15 parallel with the axis of the holder for a distance less than one-half the length of the blade, then cutting down and back along the curved line 16 through to the lower edge of the holder, substantially as shown, thus providing a cut-out 17 rounded at the rear. A deep groove 18, extending upward from the lower edge of the holder, extends rearward through the wall 16 of the cut-out, with the top edge of the groove in line with the line 15, to a distance rearward from the tip of the nose 14 equal substantially to the length of the blade. The blade 10 is conneced to the holder by inserting its rear portion in the groove 18, as shown. It is to be noted that the cutting edge of the blade protrudes beyond the lower edge of the holder when so inserted.
Aligned transverse passages 19 are provided through the holder just behind the wall 16, and these are preferably countersunk, as shown. With the blade positioned in the groove, a bolt 21 is passed through the openings 19 and through the slot 12 of the blade, and tightened to retain the blade.
For many applications of the instrument the rear end of the blade will register against the rear end of the groove 18, whence the front end of the blade will align with the tip of the nose 14. However, where a greater depth of cut is to be made, the blade may be moved forward in the groove, as indicated in Fig. 4, and locked in the new position with the tip of the blade extending beyond the tip of the nose. Where accuracy is desired in cutting to the proper depth, measured graduations 20 may be provided on one or both sides of the holder, with the zero mark positioned in line with the rear edge of the groove, as shown in Fig. 4. i
It is to be noted that, regardless of the position of the blade longitudinally with respect to the holder, it is firm and sturdy, the upper edge of the blade, upon downward application of a cutting pressure, being firmly backed by the roof of the groove and the line or edge 15, that is, the roof of the cutout under the nose 14.
Thus a simple, practical and sturdy cutting instrument has been provided, utilizing a commonly available blade.
Obviously, modifications in form or structure may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
I claim:
A holder for an elongated rectangular blade having a longitudinal slot therethrough intermediate the length thereof, comprising an elongated member having a top edge and a bottom edge, said holder having the front lower corner thereof cut away to provide a cut-out, the top wall of said cut-out lying in a plane parallel with said bottom edge and spaced nearer said top edge than said bottom edge, the rear wall of said cut-out being positioned a distance from the front extremity of the member approximately equal to one-half the length of the blade, said member having a longitudinal groove through the lower edge thereof extending rearward through said rear wall of the cut-out a distance of approximately one-half the length of the blade, said groove lying at right angles to said plane and having the base thereof lying in the same plane as said top wall, said member having aligned transverse passages through the forward portion thereof on opposite sides of said groove, said blade being adapted to be positioned with the rear portion thereof registering and being longitudinally slidable in said groove and with the upper edge of the forward portion of the blade registering against said top wall and with said blade slot in alignment with said passages, bolt means passing through said aligned passages and said slot for releasably locking the blade to the holder, the lower portion of said rear wall of the cut-out at the junction thereof with said bottom edge of the member being convexly rounded, said aligned passages extending through said member within the confines of said rounded portion.
